Zam is an alien from an unknown world, and is one of Nitros Oxide's henchmen, along with Zem. He races for Team Oxide, which in turn is affiliated with Emperor Velo XXVII. He resembles a lizard with a toad-like throat sac, and acts similar to a dog. Zam comes across as the "team pet" and the alien equivalent of Polar and Pura.
When Zam wins a cup, his victory stance involves him sitting, looking around and barking like a dog. During races, he growls like a dog and barks.
Zam makes his first appearance in the console versions of Crash Nitro Kart, unlocked by completing the Purple Gem Cup.
He reappears in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, again as an unlockable racer, though he is available from the start as a pre-order bonus with the Nitros Oxide Edition.

- Zam did not appear in the GBA version of Crash Nitro Kart.
- Billy West's voice clips were retained for the Japanese version of Crash Nitro Kart.
- In both CNK and CTR Nitro-Fueled, Zam stands in his seat in such a way that his feet don't touch the pedals of his kart.
