Deoxys - Turtwig (#387) - Grotle
First gamePokémon Diamond and Pearl

Turtwig (ナエトル, Naetoru, Naetle in original Japanese language versions) are one of the fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise.

Turtwig are known for being one of the three species of Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Turtwig in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]

The name Turtwig is a portmanteau of the words turtle and twig, while the Japanese name Naetle is derived from the Japanese word for seedling (, nae) and the English word turtle.

Biological characteristics[]

Turtwig's appearance is characteristic of a turtle or tortoise. Its prominent jawbone may denote a relationship to the snapping turtle. Its green and yellow body is covered by a shell. A small seedling grows on its head, similar to the plant bulb on Bulbasaur's back and the leaf on Chikorita's head. Its evolution branch resembles a crossbreed between Bulbasaur's and Squirtle's.

The soil-based shell on its back grows stronger when it absorbs water. Turtwig survives by carrying out photosynthesis with its whole body. The leaf on its head will wilt if it becomes thirsty. As a result, it lives in areas that are close to lakes.

In the video games[]

Turtwig is the Grass-type Starter Pokémon choice in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, similar to Bulbasaur, Chikorita and Treecko of other games.

Turtwig is one of the Pokémon used by Sinnoh Gym Leader Gardenia.

At level 18, Turtwig evolves into Grotle, which evolves into Torterra at Level 32.

In the Pokémon anime[]

Turtwig makes its first Pokémon anime appearance in the first episode of the Diamond and Pearl series, "Following a Maiden Voyage!", where it is shown as one of the three Sinnoh starter Pokemon in Professor Rowan's lab. Ash also catches a wild Turtwig in the episode: "Gettin' Twiggy With It." Ash's Turtwig has a habit of chomping down on Ash's head to express joy and emotions. Turtwig also makes an appearance in "Naetle vs. Naetle! Speed Showdown!!" Here it is under the control of the Eterna City Gym Leader Gardenia. Gardenia's Turtwig knows the powerful Leaf Storm attack.

Turtwig cards and every other cards came out on May 23. In March 2007, three limited edition collectors' tins were released by Pokémon USA. Turtwig Lv.10 from Diamond & Pearl was included in one of the tins as a special holographic card. The other two tins contained Chimchar Lv.8 and Piplup Lv.9 from the same set.
