Truman Capote García ( New Orleans , September 30th 1924 - Los Angeles , August 25 1984 ) was an American writer . He wrote fiction, nonfiction, short stories and plays.His best known works are In Cold Blood ( 1966 ) and the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's ( 1958 ). Of his works are at least 20 films and television series.

Capote was born Truman Streckfus Persons in New Orleans . He was a lonely child and taught himself to read before he went to school. On his fourth, he moved to Monroeville , where he became friends with the late author Harper Lee , his neighbor . With her he maintained a lifelong friendship and he affects her most famous work To Kill a Mockingbird . Capote himself began writing at the age of eight and claimed to have written on his ninth. In 1933 he moved to New York City to be with his mother and her second husband, Joseph Capote, to live, whose name he took. His first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms ( 1948 ) was an instant success and became a bestseller . The book was more than nine weeks at the top of the bibliography of theNew York Times .
After Other Voices, Other Rooms was followed by more work. Breakfast at Tiffany's was a success, and In Cold Blood , a "non-fiction novel about a brutal murder of a family inHolcomb , Kansas . Capote plunged deep into the matter and spoke to anyone who had to do with the case, including the two sentenced to death, murderers. He befriended the killers which made it very difficult for him to finish the book. This conflict was the basis for a film of this period in his life: Capote in 2005 . Capote is played in the film by Philip Seymour Hoffman , for his role in an Oscar as best actor was given. The same theme was also the subject of Infamous (2006). In this film Capote is played by Toby Jones.
Only in 2005 was published Summer Crossing (translated into Dutch as a summer long ). The manuscript of this little novel, written in the forties (before Other voices, other rooms ), resurfaced in 2004 at auction. After the success of In Cold Blood Capote had this manuscript (not for publication ) in the waste paper put where it was intercepted. by a caretaker The book was discussed in December 2005 at VPRO radio Evenings (part Friday until December 2013: Dream Trade).

Capote was openly gay at a time when that was unusual. He was known for his high, lisping voice and distinctive dress. His resemblance to the also gay dandy , Oscar Wilde , is striking. Capote died onAugust 25 1984 at the age of 59 as a result of an overdose at the home of Joanne Carson, former wife of the famous TV host Johnny Carson .
