Biography[Edit][]

The members of the Group had as studio musicians worked on hundreds of albums before they went under the name Toto work together. Toto is not named after the little dog Toto from Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, as is often assumed. Where is that drummer Jeff Porcaro, shortly after seeing this film, the demo tapes of the Group noted with the word ' Toto '. Bassist David Hungate Jeff Porcarofollowed the idea of. In the season 1988/' 89 has Jeff Porcaro in the Ahoy in Rotterdam a interview given to Jan Douwe Kroeske. Toto comes from the Latin In Toto, Et Toto or Et Totas, what ' comprehensive ' means.

The band is so named because the Group wants to use music styles as much as possible when creating their music. In the interview says Porcaro: "We didn't júst play heavy metal, or didn't just play R & B, we liked all sorts of music. We don't think there should be any barriers for what we are capable of doing or want to play ". The interview is on the dvd toto's Greatest Hits Live.. And More!. Many people still think that Robert Toteaux the official name of singer Bobby Kimball. However, this was a joke made by guitarist Steve Lukather, during an interview.

Jeff Porcaro died in 1992.

Toto: the band[Edit][]

Toto arises in 1976 in Los Angeles, when David Paich and Jeff Porcaro start a band together. Paich and Porcaro are already valued session musicians including Steely Dan, but they would like to start your own band. The first during the recordings of the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs, Paich for which 8 of the 10 songs (mee) writes. Work more to the album also Porcaro and Hungate and the tour. Especially Lowdown and Lido Shuffle, Jeff Porcaro's trademark, let all hear the sound a little Toto later.

High School friend Steve Lukather and Jeff's brother, Steve added to the band as The guitarist and keyboardist respectively from Louisiana -born singer Bobby Kimball is the last to tire added. Greats like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins were also in the race for the position as lead singer, but the band felt that Kimball's sound the band folded. Michael McDonald is incidentally as a guest or on the Toto- I'll Be Over Younumber of the Fahrenheit album. With Bobby Kimball is the band than complete.

Breakthrough and consequences[Edit][]

In 1978 will score their first hit with Toto Hold The Line, from the debut album "Toto". For this album she received a Grammy Awardnomination for Best New Artist. The successful debut is succeeded by "Hydra" (1979) and Turn Back (1981). Their fourth record, which in 1982 under the aptly named Toto IV comes out, leads to the large break-through for the California rock band. The album includes the hits Africa and Rosanna. The title of this latest issue comes from actress Rosanna Arquette, who at the time of the recording of the album went out with Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro-regularly. However, the song is not about the actress, but about three different girls. Writer David Paich, on the official Toto website, about the song: Rosanna is about three girls that I knew all rolled into one. After I with Rosanna Arquette, I think I just stole her name and stuck it on there.

The album achieved double platinum status and the band receives as many as six Grammy Awards, namely Album of the year, Record of the year (for the single "Rosanna"), Producer of the year, Best Engineered Recording, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals (again for "Rosanna") and Best Vocal Arrangement ( Rosannaagain). Steve Lukather will also receive another Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Song (for Turn Your Love Around, which he co-wrote with Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin wrote). This Grammy success is surpassed by three artists: Michael Jackson in 1983, Carlos Santana in 1999 Norah Jones in 2003.

Just before the world tour "Toto IV" bassist David Hungate from the band. He has just become a father and feels responsible for his family. Michael Porcaro and Steve, replaces him.

Over the years, the band struggle to maintain their lead singers. The first lead singer, Bobby Kimball, is after a number of years because of excessive cocaine use from the band and replaced by Fergie Frederiksen, of the band ' Le Roux '. In 1984 they produce not only the boxing-themed for the Olympic Games of that year (' Moodido-The Match '), but there is also released a new album, entitled Isolation. David Paich and Steve Porcaro on behalf of work In 1985 Toto participates in We Are The World by USA for Africa .

After "Isolation" should Frederiksen replaced Joseph Williams (son of the composer John Williams). Joseph has sung on two Toto albums ("Fahrenheit" in 1986 and "The Seventh One" from 1988) and has experienced several world tours. Frederiksen is also yet to hear on "Fahrenheit", but not as lead singer. In 1987 will also start second keyboardist Steve Porcaro. He's going to chase his dream: writing film music. He continues to play to this day, however, on new studio albums by Toto.

"The Seventh One" is one of the most popular Toto albums, with hits like "Pamela" and "Stop Loving You". For the first time in the existence of the band, get Toto off of their principle that they only ' airy ' music without protest messages and social charges. The love lyrics are still present, but especially in "Only The Children" and "Home of the Brave" are still denounced social abuses. After a long world tour for "The Seventh One" Joseph Williams, decision to leave the band and focus on a solo career to collapse.

For the successor of "The Seventh One", "Past to Present" (1990), the South African Jean Michael Byron by the record company to Toto forced upon them as a new singer. This is a stab in the heart of the Toto members, because they just sat at the table again with Bobby Kimball and had more or less asked him come back again. Kimball understands the powerlessness of his friends and get off the plan. The relationship between Toto and their record company is meanwhile more than strained, partly because of financial difficulties that are already taking place years earlier. In 1992 leaving Toto their record company and they begin to record CDs in-house. Until that time, however, they are still ' stuck ' with Jean Michael Byron. Byron sings on "Past to Present" only four numbers, since the album for the rest from previously released songs exists. The singer should for the next album, "Kingdom Of Desire" from 1992 been replaced by another. Guitarist Steve Lukather is itself decided to seize the lead vocals. After long work, writing and recording the album "Kingdom of Desire" and state the world tour planned.

On August 5, 1992 drummer Jeff Porcaro half an hour in the garden of his home in California, after which he enters and takes a shower. If he comes down the stairs after showering, he drops for the eyes of his wife and children in each other. His wife calling the emergency services and Porcaro's father and brothers, who in turn call other Toto band members. All rush to the hospital. Here they get the notice that Jeff Porcaro on the way to the hospital from complications of a heart attack has died. Although media claim that Porcaro died from the effects of cocaine, turns out at the autopsy that he had a bad heart and had used cocaine for over five years. Later it turns out that Porcaro's the heart and blood vessels showed a genetic anomaly that, in combination with an allergic reaction to a strong insects-pesticides that afternoon that he had used to maintain his garden, caused the fatal heart attack.

Toto after the death of Jeff Porcaro[Edit][]

Long doubted by the remaining members is whether they should continue their drummer now deceased. In the spirit of Porcaro they decide the album "Kingdom of Desire" just out and already planned tour (for which all the crew already was hired) to let go. The British drummer Phil Simon Lambert, which for some time was familiar with Steve Lukather, through their work with Carlos Santanaand Jeff Beck , is approached to take over at Porcaro's place. Phil Simon Lambert was one of Jeffs favorite drummers. When these consents is within a week and a half the tour along with Phil Simon Lambert prepared. Starting from the first concert that is played without Jeff Porcaro, the group is always a moment to instruct a number to their deceased friend. The words "This one is for (our brother) Jeff" sound once a guaranteed action by the Hall, often for the song "Kingdom of Desire", which according to Lukather the favorite number from that album of Porcaro was.

In december 1992 the band organizes a ' Tribute to Jeff ' concert in Los Angeles, where many superstars make their appearance to commemorate the drummer. Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, James Newton HowardDon Henley (The Eagles), Eddie van Halen (Van Halen), David Crosby (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young), Denny Dias and George Harrison (The Beatles) are among them.

After "Kingdom Of Desire" comes "Tambu" in 1995 with likewise Lukather as the lead singer. Prior to the album "Mindfields" from 1999 again sought contact with Bobby Kimball, who at the time lived in Germany for years. The Group dives together with their original lead singer in the rehearsal room and the click that they felt, 20 years earlier, even though it still shows to be present: Kimball comes back as lead singer of Toto. The click is also not go unnoticed: "Mindfields" will receive a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical.

In addition to new studio albums by Toto, the Group regularly compilations, live albums or film soundtracks from. In 1993 is "Absolutely Live" on the market, in 1996 followed by "Best Ballads". In 1984, the soundtrack for the film Dune. This soundtrack is completely written by keyboardist David Paich and is performed by Toto. Artist Brian Eno, from glam rock group Roxy Music, is also working on this project. In 2003, the dvd "Live in Amsterdam", where there is also a cd of appears.

In 1997 also comes from the album "Toto XX". "Toto XX" is a special kind of compilation album. It is released in honor of the 20th anniversary of Toto and contains songs that the previous albums (oddly enough) have never met. There are four live songs on ("Africa", "On The Run", "Dave's Gone Skiing" and African folk song "Baba Mnumzane"), whose "On The Run" also never appeared on an album.

After "Mindfields" remains a few years in the field of quiet around Toto studio albums. Though the group brings the album "Livefields" from (1999), with a registration of a concert from the tour of the album "Mindfields". In 2002 the top musicians back again with Simon studio included a drummer, in Phillips's, album, titled "Through The Looking Glass". This album consists entirely of cover versions of previous songs, in honor of the artists who have written those numbers. Toto exists in 2002 as a band 25 years and this is their way of honoring the people who made sure that they ever started making music (thus Lukather at the concert in Amsterdam in 2003). "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by George Harrison and "Could You Be Loved" by Bob Marley are examples of numbers used by Toto covered are for this album.

Toto after 25 + years[Edit][]

In 2006, their newest album "Falling In Between". This album appears at rockplaten society Frontiers Records. Once again proves Toto with this album in all musical styles at home. Prune hard rock ("Falling in Between"), catchy pop rock ("King of the World"), ballads ("Bottom of your Soul" and "Simple Life") and even gospel ("Spiritual Man") pass in review on this album. On this Gallery makes new keyboardist Greg Tambu also featured John James also for the first time its appearance. He would replace David Paich during the "Falling in Between Tour" and since this was already known in advance, he was also asked to play along and write on the new album. Tambu also featured John James is keyboardist Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson's been, Quincy Jones and Eric Clapton. Paich, who for personal reasons a while touring a little less wild, has now carried, leaving Toto now from time to time again with two keyboardists plays.

The band members have also made a name as many hits in addition to own session musician. Paich, Lukather and Jeff Porcaro for example, are responsible for the music of Michael Jackson almost all the songs on the album "Thriller". Salient detail: Lukather also plays guitar on this album in addition to bass guitar.

The latest music (a double-cd with the complete concert from Paris in 2007) appeared on 29 October 2007. The dvd followed on 25 February 2008. On the dvd is to see Leland "Lee" Sklar , as a replacement for the to AS suffering bassist Mike Porcaro. Sklar, known, among other things, the band of Phil Collins, is one of the most in-demand session bassists in the world.
