The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a video game, based on the film of the same name, released in March of 1983 by Wizard Video Games[1] for the Atari 2600.[2] The game was designed and programmed by VSS, a software development company started by Ed Salvo and several other ex-Apollo programmers.
Publication[]
In 1982, a video game adaptation of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released for the Atari 2600 by Wizard Video.[3]
Gameplay[]
In the game, the player takes on the role of the movie's chainsaw-wielding villain, Leatherface,[4] and attempts to murder trespassers while avoiding obstacles such as fences, wheelchairs, and cow skulls.[5] The player controls the murderer with the objective to chase and kill victims.[6] Each victim slain gives the player 1,000 points. The player receives additional fuel at every 5,000 points (5 victims). A life is lost when the player's chainsaw runs out of gasoline. Gameplay ends when the last tank of gas is consumed.
Controversy[]
As one of the first horror-themed video games, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre caused controversy when it was released due to the violent nature of the video game and sold poorly as many video game stores refused to carry it.[3][7] The game was poorly received because of its lackluster gameplay.[2] Wizard's other commercial release, Halloween, had a similar reception,[8] and the limited number of copies sold have made them both highly valued items amongst Atari collectors.
