The Doors was an American band from the years 1965-1973. The band made rock music with psychedelic melodies and poetic lyrics. The name is taken from The Doors of Perception, the title of a book by Aldous Huxley, which in turn had the phrase taken from the poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by William Blake"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite". Because the lead singer of the band, Jim Morrison, died in the summer of 1971 , some believe that the band with his disappearance ceased to exist.

The members of the band wrote their work mostly under the influence of drugs, such as lsd. In the original line-up the band released six studio albums. After the death of Jim Morrison in 1971 was followed by two studio albums with new songs, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger took over the vocals. After almost 30 years it came to a reunion. On the initiative of Krieger and Manzarek, supplemented by Ian Astbury , replacing Jim Morrison, they toured music halls under the name The Doors of the 21st Century. Drummer John Densmore refuses to date to take part in a reunion. Are set up in July 2005 led to a lawsuit, which he won. As a result, carries the band since november 2005 the name Riders on the Storm.

Music[Edit]Edit

The Doors ranks as one of the greatest bands of the 1960s. The music is a mixture of rockbluespsychedelic musicclassical music and jazz. The inflammatory and uncompromising action by Morrison made their performances radical and controversial.

What in the musical occupation notice is the absence of a bass guitar. There is searched for a bass player, but no one wanted to play the bass parts in the manner proposed. The bass parts are thereby by Ray Manzarek played with his left hand on a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, Vox Continental organ on top of his. In the studio was used during recordings be bass players, such as Larry Knechtel, Leroy Vinnegar, Harvey Brooks, Kerry Magness, Ray Neopolitan, Lonnie Mack, Douglas Lubahn andJerry Scheff, bassist of Elvis during his shows in Las Vegas from ' 69 to ' 77, which LA Woman followed. Jim Morrison would have asked him, because he is a big fan of Elvis was. It is said that at the request of Scheff Morrison as a firm member section would become part of the band. By the death of Morrison is not come.

Robby Krieger is a versatile guitarist. He started at the age of 16 to play on a Spanish guitar and was later taught by Ravi Shankar on sitar and sarod. After seeing a performance by Chuck Berry he chose a wine redGibson SG. Mixed with his preference for the blues, slide guitar and playing the strings with the fingers rather than a plectrum has Robby Krieger about a striking style of playing.

The Doors brought a striking long song (11: 39) on the plate from: 'The End'. At live performances, this was stretched even further, so that some executions lasted 25 minutes. Large parts of the song were improvised. Sometimes wore Morrison across the lawn for his poetry , sometimes he improvised poetry. A good example of this can be found on the Matrix-tapes (1967), which are only available via the bootleg circuit.

The harmonies are largely determined by the low voice of Morrison that stands out against the strident sounds of the rock organ by Manzarek. Frequently an ostinato (repeated short motif) is used. In the improvisation rounds is often made use of the turnaround, dating a originating in the jazz chord that are repeats. This allows endless improvisations far. In the servants The Doors often scores a harmonic or melodicminor scale. There are also none-chords, pentatonic harmonies and sometimes even serialism for. All these resources deliver a range of possibilities and be sure in the long songs extensively used, which produces a great tension.

Make The Doors using the textual poetry of Jim Morrison, which also can be heard on An American Prayer. This focuses on the mystery, with often sad and mystical undertones. Many poems and song lyrics are autobiographical, dealing with the youth of Morrison. Violence, sex and death are important themes. Inspiration for this found Morrison at Arthur Rimbaud and Charles Baudelaire, poets who did support him decide to settle in Paris . Many song texts are, however, by Robby Krieger. The text of The End delivered the band from all sides because of the topic, the rebukes on oedipus complex. Hippies found it too violent (especially in the Summer of Love), while conservatives preach the moral decline found. However, similar texts would prove a major influence for example Pink Floyd.

In the four years that the band in its original line-up, changed the style under the influence of the overall Zeitgeist of acid rock to a more blues like sound. In particular, this difference on L.A. Woman , as well as the change in the voice of Morrison, who by his addiction had become unstable and rawer, lower. Also, the band is more likely a bass guitarist.

Social and musical influence[Edit]Edit

By the charisma of Jim Morrison, the band was very influential in the youth. This much to the dismay of many adults, those in Jim Morrison a dandy and provocateur, troublemaker saw. Morrison's premature death has an icon are established, so the music has endured several generations and in some circles still highly appreciated.

Despite the success The Doors came in serious trouble when Morrison was persecuted for exhibitionism and disturbing the public order. This was the result of a performance in Miami, where he would have his Member on stage show to the public. Legendary is the ruling of the Prosecutor at the end of his plea: And he did take his penis out, and shook it. Morrison was convicted of public intoxication and exhibitionism, but not for public masturbation where he initially was arrested for. Appearances in major cities were cancelled by this publicity, making the band was missing on the larger festivals from the late 1960s. So was the band become ineffective.

Many people see The Doors as important representatives of the opposing movement of the 1960s. Also the music and lyrics are proved to be of lasting value, as can be seen to the large number of covers, the continued airplay and sales of albums and the large number of bands that says influenced by The Doors.
