Tamaran is a fictional planet in DC Comics, inhabited by Tamaraneans, an extraterrestrial race.[1] The first Tamaranean introduced was Princess Koriand'r, better known as Starfire. Other named Tamaraneans are Komand'r, Starfire's sister (also known as Blackfire), her younger brother Ryand'r and her parents, Myand'r and Luand'r. (In the Teen Titans animated series, Galfore, Starfire's "k'norfka", the equivalent of a nanny, appears as well, though her parents do not.) The planet was destroyed in a war, along with Starfire's parents and many of its people. However, enough evacuated that they were able to settle on a new planet they named New Tamaran, though that planet was also destroyed. The most recent Tamaranean home was the planet Karna.
Before its destruction, Tamaran had not one ruling family, but rather many ruling families. When the planet was led to war by the Citadel race, Starfire's parents became the planet's sole ruling family. However, Blackfire later seized control from her parents. Blackfire has since been the ruler of the Tamaranean people, even after the repeated destruction of their home world.
Fictional history[]
Tamaraneans are gold-skinned humanoid people with green eyes and bushy hair who descended from a feline-like race. Tamaraneans traditionally worship the goddess X'Hal. Tamaraneans have the power to convert ultraviolet radiation into energy for flight with the females producing a distinctive contrail that seems to flow from their hair. They are ruled by their emotions and were renowned as excellent warriors. Both Starfire and Blackfire gained the ability to fire "starbolts", beams of energy, as a result of experiments performed by the Psions.
The Tamaraneans used scientific skills to make Tamaran a tropical paradise where man and nature stood side by side. The Tamaraneans fought a war with the Citadel for a century until Komand'r revealed secrets which resulted in major losses of Tamaranean life. After this, King Myand'r agreed to have his younger daughter, Princess Koriand'r given up for slavery to the Citadel. The Citadel was defeated by the Omega Men and Tamaran was plunged into civil war. This was ultimately resolved with Komand'r being given command of the planet.
The New 52[]
In the relaunch of DC Comics, The New 52, it is unknown how much of the universe has changed, but there have been significant changes in the history and culture of the Tamaranean people. Komand'r is said to have sold her sister for the safety of Tamaran from the Citadel. A major change is that Tamaraneans shown are said to only view other races[2] as sensory experiences, to the point they forget what they look like if not around the person. Though it's shown that once identified by name, Starfire can remember them. [3][4] This however is possibly false as Starfire later expresses trying to avoid getting her heart broken and was scared to become close with another human. It's also said they do not believe emotions are a necessary part of the sexual experience, recreational or reproduction wise.[5]
Tamaran suddenly came under attack by the Blight, a parasitic alien race, causing the Tamaranean starship Starfire to seek out its commander, the Princess Koriand'r, also known as Starfire. Koriand'r is hesitant to save the planet due to the people and her sister allowing her to be enslaved. It's revealed that Komand'r is working alongside the blight, but to what end is unknown.[2][6]
The Tamaranean People have visited the planet earth on multiple occasions as explained by Crux, as he lost his parents to a War Cruiser crashing into their car. Starfire's earth home is shown to be a huge crashed ship on a tropical island near the United States.[4]
Possibly an alternate version of Tamaran is shown in Green Lantern: New Guardians. The people still are orange skinned, and have the same abilities. They also have a number of small horns on their faces and shoulders. They present themselves as overtly friendly, believing that Arkillo and Saint Walker as heralds of The Archangel Invictus.[7]
Physiology of the Tamaraneans[]
Powers[]
- Tamaranean Physiology: Tamaranean's possess a greatly differentiated constitution from the baseline Homo Sapiens though boasting a genetic structure similar in their pliancy and openness to genetic modulation. The basic Tamaranean has greater resiliency and biophysical adaptability than that of a typical human, boasting a sub-molecular structure which better harnesses and stimulates their biology via the intake of Stellar and Ultraviolet Radiation. Similar too, if at a slower rate than a Kryptonian, an individual from Tamaran properly charged via UV Rays gains a greatly condensed anatomy resulting in greater muscle structure, toughened skin & bone density, self-propelled flight, etc. Beyond that their physiology also spare a couple of abnormalities further dividing them from most other species. Such as bright golden copper/orange skin tone, feline features, bright green catlike eyes, multiple auxiliary organs such as nine extra stomachs, and a prehensile tongue among other things.
- Feline Physiology
- Unique Skin / Hair / Eye Color
- Solar/Ultraviolet Metabolization: Tamaraneans can absorb and process stellar radiation, which provides them with incredible strength and vitality.
- Solar Empowerment / Stellar Empowerment
- Supernatural Condition
- Superhuman Strength: Even the strongest humans are no match for a Tamaranean's strength, as they are able to smash through concrete walls and lift cars with ease.
- Superhuman Agility: Their agility is much greater than a normal human's.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Tamaraneans are incredibly robust to all known forms of injury and abrasion. Being able to survive in the cold vacuous expanse of deep space, resist the intense surface heat of stars and traversal within reach of a Black Hole's event horizon with little irritation.
- Accelerated healing factor
- Self-sustenance
- Self-sustained flight in vacuum and atmosphere
- Thermal and Radiation Immunity: Even when depowered, Koriand'R felt little to no distress when reaching New Rann's nearby sun to restore herself.
- Superhuman Stamina: Their muscles produce less fatigue toxins than a normal human's would.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Their reflexes are much greater than a normal human's.
- Superhuman Speed: While flying, they can move at greater speeds than a normal human would be able to reach.
- Superhuman agility
- Superhuman Durability: They are very durable, allowing them to withstand attacks that would easily kill a normal human.
- Flight: The absorption of stellar energy also enables Tamaraneans to defy gravity and fly without the need of artificial enhancements.
- Interstellar Travel: Some of the stronger Tamaraneans are able to traverse the cosmos at light speed so long as they have copious amounts of extra-stellar energy to subside on.
- Plasma Flight
- Advanced Longevity: Prehistoric Tamaraneans were known to live for an extended period of time well over that of many known species of sentient beings. The eldest of their race having lived for nearly 10 billion years while remaining in his physical prime.
- Claws & Fangs: Pre-Evolved Tamaraneans had more feline than humanoid features, to that effect they possessed razor sharp canines and finger nails which could be used as an offensive measure.
- Enhanced Senses: They have incredibly sharpened kinesthesia which enables them to track and see beyond the visibility spectrum for most beings.
- Ultraviolet Vision
- Clairvoyance: A unique trait shown by Tyran'R was the ability to see through the disguise of another individual, able to sense that the entity possessing a rogue guardian.
- Tactile Linguistic Assimilation: All Tamaraneans possess the ability to psychophysically learn another species or ethnicity's vocabulary with little more than a simple touch or passing graze. The most effective means of doing so is usually through lip to lip oral contact with another recipient of the desired community.
- Immunity to Cold & Heat: They can resist extreme temperatures more than regular humans.
- Superhuman endurance
- Tolerance to extreme environmental conditions
- Wave Energizing
- Superpowered Physiology
- Abilities granted through Psion experimentation/outside tampering:
- UV Energy Manipulation: Tameraneans can consciously control the rate of Stellar Radiation intake in order to siphon power from other sources. They can also utilize it to manipulate their assimilated energies into various shapes and forms for practical usage.
- Starbolt Projection: A couple Tamaraneans are capable of emitting focused solar energy from their hands as concussive energy blasts carrying great destructive force.
- Solar energy projection: Kory possesses the ability to channel solar energy throughout her body and redirect the energy outwards as concentrated fiery bursts of intensified heat and volatility from her hands. These bursts are capable of melting, destroying and igniting dense materials or incinerate opponents into charred bodies of ash. When using this ability, her entire body and even her hair radiate with solar energy while her eyes glow a bright green.
- Stellar Construct Creation: A skill rarely displayed lies in the ability to shape and reform starbolt energy bursts into shielding or force bubbles to carry things around in.
- Stellar Energy Vision: Certain members of the race can project and emit their stellar energy from their eyes with incredibly destructive force.
- Molecular Acceleration: Skilled use of starbolt optic blasts can be used to cause the terrain surrounding a target to violently explode.
- Stellar Energy Transference: Tamaraneans can also distill and impart their solar energies onto others if need be. Such as how R'yandr had channeled his star based energy force over to Supergirl when she needed a quick recharge while battling the citadel.
- Heat Touch: Tamareneans can focus their starbolt energy into their hands and skin, being able to hyper-heat the dermal layer of their body in order to flash melt anything they make contact with.
- Self-Sustenance: A Tamaranean with enough solar energy charge can go without eating, sleeping, or needing to breathr in lifeless and inhospitable environments.
- Nuclear Pyrokinesis: Many who were experimented upon by Psion science gained the ability to emit flaming contrails whenever they utilize their powers. be it for the purpose of flight, energy blasts or releasing a Starbolt Nova; it often has the appearance of an irradiated fireball.
- Radiation Production: Kori's brother Ryand'r has the ability to detonate like a small scale fusion bomb.
- Starbolt Projection: A couple Tamaraneans are capable of emitting focused solar energy from their hands as concussive energy blasts carrying great destructive force.
- Bio-Fission: Some individuals of Tamaran are capable of casting out their ultraviolet energy as tangible duplicates of themselves. Although, this facet of their powers can be draining.
- Flight: The people of Tamaran (other than Komand'r, who lacks the flight ability) are able to harness ultra violet light energy and use it for many abilities, one of them being flight.
- Superhuman Strength
- Telempathy: A couple of Tamaraneans have exhibited the ability to speak to people by connecting to their psyche--touching and influencing the hearts and minds of others through the power of their minds.
- Telepathy: Komand'r, through use of borrowed power, gained the ability to mentally connect with another sapient mind. This enabled her to speak without using her mouth even in the vast emptiness of outer space.
- Empathy: K'li, Fury of War had the ability to broadcast her mind numbing ire for bloodshed and madness into the hearts and minds of others while guiding their actions like a puppet master.
- Power Replication: Tamaraneans can siphon the unique solar/stellar/ultraviolet energy of another Tamaranean to copy and assimilate their Starbolt based powers.
- Energy Physiology: The god of the Vega System became a creature of pure, unadulterated raw energy capable of godlike feats and abilities. Having all the powers of a modded Tamaranean but greatly magnified several hundred times over.

Weaknesses[]
- Power Instability: There are multiple factors in which a Tamaranean's physical attributes can be destabilized.
- Emotional Instability: Tamaraneans powers are regulated by their feelings, happier emotions initiate and heighten their abilities while negative emotions weaken them to the point of deactivation.
- Overload: If Tamaraneans absorb more solar radiation than they're able to process their cells run the risk of slagging. Causing their enhanced abilities to shut down, potentially for good.
- Ultraviolet Radiation Depletion: Should they be deprived of ultraviolet radiation to strengthen their bodies, a Tamaranean will slowly weaken while losing all of his or her powers and abilities.

Appearances in other media[]
- In the Teen Titans animated series, the only area of Tamaran shown appears as a barren, mountainous wasteland (a stark contrast to the lush, tropical climate of its comic book counterpart), although Starfire thinks it looks lovely. Additionally, Starfire's parents and younger brother Ryand'r are never seen, though her guardian, Galfore, does appear in the episode "Betrothed". In the same episode, Blackfire is seen as the ruler of Tamaran. Also in the animated series, Tamaraneans go through a second puberty known as the "Transformation" at around the time of the first, human-like adolescence. This process creates temporary random mutations in the Tamaranean's body, as told in "Transformation" that can range from turning purple for two days (Blackfire), or a series of gruesome changes that end in growing a chrysalis for a short period (Starfire). When her Transformation is complete, Starfire's body is returned to normal with the newfound ability to fire a starbolt out of her eyes. The animated Tamaraneans also have a prehensile tongue and nine stomachs. During Trigon's arc, Starfire mentioned that even her and her own people aware of Trigon's existence.
- Ryand'r plays an integral part in issue #46 of the Teen Titans Go! comic series, in which his name is translated as "Wildfire". The same comic series reveals that Tamaran once had an ecosystem like the mainstream comics, but the subsequent Gordanian invasion reduced it to the barren wasteland seen in "Betrothed". In the animated series, Starfire's abilities of flight, superhuman strength and starbolts are common to all Tamaraneans, being racial abilities rather than the result of Psion experiments (which is confirmed in issue #46 of Teen Titans Go!, the tie-in comic book series). All of their powers are tied into their emotional state; starbolts are fueled by fury, strength by confidence, and flight by joy.
- Tamaran appears in several episodes of Teen Titans Go!.
- Tamaran appears in Kory's flashbacks on Titans.
