The ultimate power is fueled by everyone's wish. Let me show you Super Sonic power!

Super Sonic (スーパーソニック, Sūpā Sonikku)[1] is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Super State of Sonic the Hedgehog, achieved by harnessing the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds.[2] Since its debut, this form has been Sonic's most commonly used transformation.

Originally, Super Sonic was merely a power-up that Sonic would occasionally use. However, after using it to foil Dr. Eggman during the climax of the Angel Island incident, Super Sonic would become Sonic's greatest trump card against his adversaries, providing him with the power and abilities to save the world on numerous occasions.

Appearance[]

File:Sonic2app 2016-07-07 18-50-49-980.png

Super Sonic (along with Super Shadow) in Sonic Adventure 2.

When transformed into Super Sonic, Sonic's blue fur turns into a gold color and his peach skin gains a slightly golden hue. Additionally, his green eyes become ruby red and his quills turn upward. His middle back quill varies in position though, either gaining an angled slant with a more pointy shape or getting upturned like his other quills (the latter is mostly seen in CG scenes and artwork). He also possesses a golden aura that varies in size and can be anything from smooth to flame-like in shape. His aura also sometimes displays either faint sparkles or electrical sparks.

Over the series, Super Sonic's appearance has changed gradually. Prior to Sonic Adventure, his eyes remained black when transformed (except in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles where they would turn turquoise), his golden aura was absent, and his quills would sometimes be more upturned and messy. Up until Sonic Adventure, his middle quills would also get longer when transformed. In games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and the Sonic Rush series, his middle quills would retain their normal shape, making his quill style look identical to Shadow's.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

File:Super Sonic 2.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, after seemingly destroying the Death Egg, Sonic used the seven Chaos Emeralds he had collected from West Side Island to transform into Super Sonic so he could fly safely down to the planet. On his way down, he met up with his new friend Tails in the Tornado, whom he flew through the sky with.

In this game, Sonic can unlock Super Sonic after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. Sonic will then automatically transform into Super Sonic in the Zones whenever he jumps while holding at least fifty Rings. In the 2013 re-release of this game, Sonic instead transforms into Super Sonic once the jump button is tapped again during a jump. After transforming however, the player's Ring count will begin depleting by one for each second Super Sonic is active; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will turn back to normal. Sonic will also de-transform whenever he finishes an Act. In gameplay, Super Sonic possesses invincibility, increased acceleration, and a heightened Spin Jump for as long as his transformation lasts. However, he can still die from drowning, falling into bottomless pits, getting crushed, or receiving a Time Over.

Completing the game with all seven Chaos Emeralds will make Super Sonic appear during the game's ending cutscene.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

File:Super Sonic-0.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its add-on continuation Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Sonic went Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds when he and Tails came up Angel Island. As Super Sonic stormed the island however, Knuckles came and pulled a cheap shot[3] on Super Sonic that made him lose both his Super State and the Chaos Emeralds. The latter were then stolen by Knuckles and hidden all over the island. After reacquiring the Emeralds, Sonic went Super Sonic in The Doomsday Zone. There, Super Sonic defeated Dr. Robotnik and took back Angel Island's stolen Master Emerald. While carrying the Master Emerald back however, Sonic powered down in mid-flight. Luckily, Tails arrived in time with the Tornado to pick up Sonic and the Master Emerald.

In these games, Sonic can unlock Super Sonic as a playable feature after obtaining all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. For then to transform into Super Sonic during an Act, the player must jump and perform the Insta-Shield while holding at least fifty Rings. After transforming however, the player's Ring count will begin decreasing by one every second; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will revert back to normal. Sonic will similarly de-transform upon finishing an Act. Like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, when Sonic turns into Super Sonic, he gains greater acceleration, higher Spin Jumps, invincibility for as long as his transformation lasts, and the ability to break through barriers that usually require the Spin Dash.[4] He also possesses all the limitations the transformation had in the previous game.

Doomsday

Super Sonic in The Doomsday Zone.

When the player reaches The Doomsday Zone as Sonic, Sonic will automatically turn into Super Sonic for the final boss battle. When beginning this Zone, Super Sonic starts out with fifty Rings. More Rings can obtained throughout the boss battle to compensate for the player's decreasing Ring count. Should Sonic de-transform here however, the player will lose a life. Also worth noting is that even though Super Sonic is invulnerable to all attacks and obstacles in this Zone, their impacts can still send him reeling backwards for a few seconds. In The Doomsday Zone though, Super Sonic gains additional abilities: he can fly around the screen and shoot forward with a small burst of speed whenever one of the action buttons is pressed. Also, after clearing The Doomsday Zone as Super Sonic, Super Sonic will appear during the ending credits.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, when the player enters Hidden Palace Zone by using one of the hidden Super Rings in the Zones of Sonic & Knuckles, the player loses the Chaos Emeralds to resurrect the Super Emeralds and the player cannot use Super Sonic from then on; instead, Super Sonic will be replaced by the unlockable Hyper Sonic form. Despite this, the player is still able to enter The Doomsday Zone as Super Sonic.

Sonic the Fighters[]

File:Super Sonic .jpg

Super Sonic in Sonic the Fighters.

In Sonic the Fighters, after arriving on the Death Egg II and going a round with Metal Sonic, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and made short work of his doppelganger. As the Death Egg II then began its self-destruct sequence, Dr. Robotnik arrived in his E-Mech to combat Super Sonic. However, Super Sonic quickly beat the doctor and escaped the exploding Death Egg in the Lunar Fox.

In this game, Super Sonic appears as the only secret unlockable character in the game. However, he is only playable for the second match against Metal Sonic and the final fight against Dr. Robotnik under specific circumstances. If Sonic is able to successfully win each stage and not lose a single round up until the second round with Metal Sonic, initiating Hyper Mode at that point will cause Sonic to transform into Super Sonic for the remainder of the game. In gameplay, Super Sonic has faster attacks and invulnerability to damage. His transformation also has no time limit.

Sonic R[]

File:Super sonic 2.png

Super Sonic in Sonic R.

In Sonic R, Super Sonic appears as a secret unlockable character separate from Sonic. To unlock Super Sonic, the player must collect the seven Chaos Emeralds which are hidden on the first four race tracks. Once the player has found an Emerald during a race, they must finish said race in first place to keep the Emerald. If placed second or lower, the obtained Emerald will be lost, and the player must start the procedure over.

In gameplay, Super Sonic is the fastest racer among the playable characters and the all-round best character in the game. Also, unlike most of his other appearances, Super Sonic has no time limit determined by a Ring count. His high speed tends to make cornering tricky, but smacking into walls is a trifling issue with Super Sonic's top notch acceleration. In addition, he is able to hover over water sections. His moveset in this game include the Spin Dash Roll, the Spin Dash, and a towering Double Jump.

Sonic Adventure[]

Supersv2

Super Sonic in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, when Perfect Chaos was wrecking havoc across a flooded Station Square, Sonic used the positive chaos energy of the partially drained Chaos Emeralds, brought forth by his friends and the people's belief in him, to transform into Super Sonic. With his Super State, Sonic defeated Perfect Chaos and neutralized its anger.

In this game, Super Sonic is only playable in the Perfect Chaos boss fight featured in the game's "Super Sonic" scenario. When beginning the fight, Super Sonic starts out with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. To compensate for that, the player can pick up Rings throughout the boss battle. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the boss battle however, he will power down and lose a life.

In gameplay, Super Sonic is invulnerable to harm, although he can still get knocked back or slowed down by Perfect Chaos' attacks. He can also hover across water and trigger the Bolt of lightning when reaching maximum speed.

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure[]

File:Chaotic Space Zone.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure.

In Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, when Dr. Eggman attempted to escape Sonic by flying into space, Sonic used the seven Chaos Emeralds (which includes the one Eggman stole from Knuckles) to become Super Sonic and follow after the doctor. Defeating Eggman and his final mech in space, Super Sonic flew back to earth, where he got picked up by Tails in the Tornado as he powered down.

In this game, Super Sonic is only playable against the final boss in the Chaotic Space Zone, which can only be accessed after the player clears Last Utopia Zone with all the Chaos Emeralds in their possession. When beginning the fight, Super Sonic starts out with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. To make up for that, the player can pick up Rings throughout the boss battle. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the boss battle however, Sonic will de-transform and lose a life. During gameplay, Sonic will be invulnerable to all harm, although the impact from the final boss's attacks can knock him backward. He is also able to fly all over the screen.

Sonic Shuffle[]

File:SSSS133.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Shuffle.

In Sonic Shuffle, Super Sonic appears as an unlockable character separate from Sonic, who can be used on any board in Versus Mode. To unlock Super Sonic, the player must first clear the single player campaign as Sonic, and then buy the bottom right picture in Sonic's photo album in the Sonic Room.

In gameplay, Super Sonic plays identical to Sonic, but with stronger attacks. His special movement ability is the "Light Speed Spin Dash", which allows double the Spaces moved when the same number is played twice in a row, which can be chained indefinitely if the right cards are played. His attack ability is "Sonic Rumble" (which involves Super Sonic damaging an enemy by quickly flying into them and then retreating), where the roulette only contains the values four to six.[5]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

File:Super Sonic powering up.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2.

In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic used the Chaos Emeralds in order to become Super Sonic so he could stop the Finalhazard before it could drag the Space Colony ARK into Earth. With the aid of Super Shadow, whom he shared the Emeralds' power with, Super Sonic defeated the beast. He and Super Shadow then used a combined Chaos Control to warp the ARK back into a stable orbit around Earth.

In this game, the player can only play as Super Sonic (and Super Shadow) when battling the Finalhazard in the game's "Last Story" scenario. The player can switch between controlling Super Sonic and Super Shadow by damaging the Finalhazard or by flying to the other side of the boss arena. When beginning the fight, Super Sonic and Super Shadow start out with fifty Rings each. However, the characters' Ring counts will decrease by one each second; should one of their Ring counts hit zero during the boss battle, the character will de-transform and lose a life. To replenish a character's Ring count, the player must switch characters for a while, with the character on standby using this opportunity to replenish their Ring count.[6][7] However, as the Finalhazard loses health, the cap for the characters' Ring counts will get lower. The player will similarly lose the fight if they have not defeated the Finalhazard in less than five minutes (which is by then the ARK hits the Earth).

In gameplay, Super Sonic will be invulnerable to the Finalhazard's attacks, although their impacts can still knock him a great distance away. He can also perform the Super Sonic Boost, which is needed to damage the Finalhazard's weak spots.

Sonic Advance series[]

Sonic Advance[]

File:MoonZone.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Advance.

In Sonic Advance, Sonic became Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds so he could follow Dr. Eggman to the moon after the doctor escaped him in X-Zone. Confronting a mech-wearing Eggman in The Moon Zone, Super Sonic ultimately defeated the doctor. A few days later, Super Sonic appeared in the sky above the Earth, where he met Tails in the Tornado.

In this game, Super Sonic is only playable against the Super Egg Robot in The Moon Zone, which can only be accessed after the player clears the X-Zone as Sonic with all the Chaos Emeralds in his possession. When the boss fight begins, Super Sonic will have fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. As compensation, the player can break the Super Egg Robot's capsule traps in order to reveal Rings right for the taking. If Super Sonic's Ring count hits zero in The Moon Zone though, Sonic will power down and lose a life.

In gameplay, Sonic will be invulnerable to all harm. However, the impact from the Super Egg Robot's attacks can knock him backward, and its capsule traps can immobilize him for a few moments. Super Sonic will also be gliding along the ground by default, but he can take flight for a short time when jumping. While jumping, he can use the Super Sonic Boost, which is needed to attack the Super Egg Robot's head and its capsules.

Sonic Advance 2[]

File:Sva2ss.gif

Super Sonic in Sonic Advance 2.

In Sonic Advance 2, Sonic went Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds in order to rescue Vanilla after Dr. Eggman kidnapped her and took her into space. After defeating Dr. Eggman's final vehicle in space, Super Sonic tried desperately to slow down the Capsule containing Vanilla as it reentered the Earth's atmosphere. When the Capsule broke apart in mid-drop however, Sonic lost his Super State and had to rescue Vanilla without it.

In this game, Super Sonic is only playable against the boss in True Area 53. This particular Zone can only be unlocked after the player defeats the final boss of XX as Sonic with all the Chaos Emeralds in his possession and has beaten the game with all the other characters. Like in previous titles, Super Sonic will start out the boss fight with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. For fighting the decreasing Ring count, the player can pick up the Rings that appear throughout the Zone. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the boss battle however, Sonic will revert back to normal and lose a life.

In gameplay, Sonic will be invulnerable to all harm. However, the impact from the final boss's attack can knock him backward, and its freeze ray can immobilize him for a few moments. Super Sonic can also fly around the screen and use the Super Sonic Boost, which is used to knock the final boss's missile back at it.

Sonic Advance 3[]

File:Nonagression.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Advance 3.

In Sonic Advance 3, after Ultimate G-merl went on a rampage, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds and teamed up with Eggman to stop Ultimate G-merl. Confronting the rogue robot in space, the unlikely duo defeated Ultimate G-merl, although Super Sonic passed out when Ultimate G-merl exploded. He later woke up on Earth, back in his original form.

Much like in previous Sonic Advance titles, Super Sonic is only playable against Ultimate G-merl in Nonaggression. To access this Zone, the player must beat the Hyper Eggrobo a second time with Sonic while possessing all seven Chaos Emeralds. Like in previous titles, Super Sonic start out the boss fight with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will decrease by one each second. To compensate for this, the player can pick up the Rings that appear throughout the Zone. Should Super Sonic lose all of his Rings during the boss battle however, he will turn back to normal and lose a life.

In gameplay, Super Sonic cannot take damage under any circumstance. However, he can still get knocked back by Ultimate G-merl's attacks and be immobilized briefly by his freeze rays. Like in Sonic Advance 2, Super Sonic can also fly around the screen and use the Super Sonic Boost. In addition, he is able to perform a Tag Action with Eggman. This new move lets him charge the Egg Mobile-riding Eggman with energy before firing him as a projectile. This move is used to bare Ultimate G-merl's closed eye so Super Sonic can attack it with the Super Sonic Boost.

Sonic Heroes[]

Sh09

Super Sonic, Super Tails and Super Knuckles in Sonic Heroes.

In Sonic Heroes, when Metal Overlord took off to take over the world, Team Sonic used the Chaos Emeralds to transform Sonic into Super Sonic, who in turn passed some of his power onto Tails and Knuckles, thus allowing them to turn into Super Tails and Super Knuckles. Together, Team Super Sonic defeated Metal Overlord, ending the robot's plans to establish a robot kingdom.

In this game, Super Sonic and his crew are only playable for the final battle boss against Metal Overlord. To unlock this fight, the player must clear all four storylines in the game and collected the seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. Like in previous titles, Super Sonic begins the Metal Overlord fight with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. To obtain new Rings, the player must pick up Rings from the Floating Item Boxes that appear during the boss battle. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the fight however, Team Super Sonic will de-transform and lose a life.

In gameplay, Super Sonic cannot take damage under any circumstances. However, he can still get knocked back by Metal Overlord's attacks and get imprisoned by Metal Overlord's crystal-encaging missiles. Super Sonic also has access to all of Sonic's regular moves and the Light Speed Attack, and his Power Core level is at maximum. Super Sonic's Homing Attack is especially specially useful for countering Metal Overlord's Crystal Attack.

In Sega Superstars, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic by gathering all seven Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic's Speed Chute minigame, which has him run down a Special Stage-like tunnel filled with Rings and spiked bombs, in his story mode. While transformed, Sonic gains a boost in speed and invulnerability, with every obstacle shattering into pieces when touching him. Also, by transforming into Super Sonic, the player will receive 5,000 bonus points at the end of the minigame.

Sega Superstars Tennis[]

Super Sonic in Sega Superstars Tennis.

In Sega Superstars Tennis, Super Sonic serves as Sonic's Superstar State move. In this game, he has the ability to serve zigzagged tennis balls with such power that they knock the opponent back. Aside from that, Super Sonic is just a model of Sonic's form, possessing the same animation and movements.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing[]

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Super Sonic can be activated by using the All-Star Move for Sonic. While in this form, Sonic can fly at high speed and use the Super Sonic Boost to gain an increase in speed and boost through other racers.

Sonic Rush series[]

Sonic Rush[]

File:Supersonic2.JPG

Super Sonic in Sonic Rush.

In Sonic Rush, Sonic used the seven Chaos Emeralds he had collected to become Super Sonic so he could help Blaze, who transformed into Burning Blaze with the power of the Sol Emeralds, defeat Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega and foil the villains' plan to establish an Eggmanland upon both Sonic's world and Blaze's world. After defeating the doctors' Egg Salamander, Super Sonic and Burning Blaze shared a heartfelt goodbye before being pulled back to their home dimensions.

In this game, Super Sonic appears as one of the two playable characters (the other being Burning Blaze) used to fight the Egg Salamander in Exception. To unlock this fight, the player must clear both Sonic and Blaze's storyline, and have obtain all the Chaos Emeralds (via the Special Stage) and all the Sol Emeralds (via story progression in Blaze's storyline). The player switch between controlling Super Sonic and Burning Blaze, with the switch occurring after dealing a specific amount of damage to the Egg Salamander. When beginning Exception, Super Sonic will start out with fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. To compensate for this, the player can pick up the Rings that appear throughout the Zone. Should Super Sonic lose all his Rings during the boss battle however, Sonic will turn back to normal and lose a life.

In gameplay, Super Sonic will be invulnerable to almost all obstacles and attacks from the Egg Salamander; only the Egg Salamander's missile barrage can damage Super Sonic, which will make him lose ten Rings when it hits. Any other attack or obstacle will simple knock Super Sonic backwards. Aside from that, Super Sonic is also capable of flying around the screen and using the Super Sonic Boost, which is needed for knocking the Egg Salamander's flying drones back into its cockpit.

Sonic Rush Adventure[]

File:EggWizardDestroyed.png

Super Sonic finishing off the Egg Wizard.

In Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic and Blaze became Super Sonic and Burning Blaze with their respective set of Emeralds in order to destroy the Egg Wizard (controlled by Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega) and take back the Jeweled Scepter. As the heroic due was about to get hit by the Egg Wizard's "Planet-Buster Laser" however, Marine the Raccoon distracted the mech. This gave Burning Blaze the opportunity to uppercut the Egg Wizard and allowing Super Sonic to deal the final blow.

In this game, Super Sonic appears as one of the two playable characters (the other being Burning Blaze) used to fight the Egg Wizard in Deep Core. This stage can only be unlocked after the player clears Big Swell and obtains all the Chaos Emeralds from the Johnny's Races, as well as all the Sol Emeralds from the Missions. During the boss battle, the player can switch between controlling Super Sonic and Burning Blaze by pressing Template:R Button (DS). Also, like in Sonic Rush, Super Sonic and Burning Blaze begin Deep Core with fifty Rings in their possession. However, their Ring count will be decreasing by one each second. To compensate for this, the player can pick up the Rings that appear during the stage. Should the characters lose all their Rings during the boss battle however, Sonic and Blaze will de-transform and lose a life.

In gameplay, Super Sonic cannot get harmed by obstacles and attacks from the Egg Wizard. However, these hazards can still knock him back if they hit him. He can also get paralyzed by the Egg Wizard's energy beams. That aside, Super Sonic is also able to perform the Super Sonic Boost and a new move that lets him deflect the Egg Wizard's fireballs, meteors, and fire-composed dragons back at it.

Sonic Riders series[]

Sonic Riders[]

File:Super Sonic.PNG

Super Sonic in Sonic Riders.

In Sonic Riders, Super Sonic appears as a form that Sonic can assume while using the Chaos Emerald Extreme Gear. This Gear can be obtained by achieving a gold emblem for all of the Babylon Rogues' missions.

When beginning a race with the Chaos Emerald, Sonic will instantly transform into Super Sonic and obtain thirty Rings. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by roughly one each second. To make up for that, the player can pick up Rings along the race tracks. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero however, Sonic will de-transform and begin running on foot until he can collect more Rings, at which point he will transform back into Super Sonic.

In gameplay, Super Sonic has unlimited Air in his Air Tank and invulnerability to other racers' attacks. Additionally, Super Sonic possesses maximum acceleration and top speed, and performs well off-road. By Air Boosting, he can also initiate the Super Sonic Boost, which lets him plow through obstacles and opponents (who will be left dazed and confused) without slowing down. As Super Sonic, Sonic becomes as well a Speed Type, Flight Type and Power Type, allowing him to grind, smash through obstacles and ride through Accelerators. Actions such as grinding and riding Turbulence also (somehow) cause Super Sonic's decreasing Ring counter to freeze momentarily. However, using Super Sonic comes with some drawbacks. Performing the Air Slide causes Super Sonic to consume Rings at a much faster rate, and using the Air Boost costs twenty Rings per usage. Also, attacking opponents with the Super Sonic Boost cost ten additional Rings for each hit. In addition to that, Super Sonic cannot set up Tonradoes or level up.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

File:SuperSonicZeroGravity.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Super Sonic appears again as a form Sonic can assume while using the Chaos Emerald Extreme Gear. To unlock the Chaos Emerald in this game, the player must clear all of the missions in Mission Mode with an Extreme Rank in both the Heroes story and the Babylon story.

When competing in a race with the Chaos Emerald, Sonic will begin the race by running on foot instead of riding on his Gear. He also starts out with zero Rings in his possession. However, once Sonic obtains at least one Ring, he will transform into Super Sonic and start riding on his Gear. Upon transforming however, Sonic's Ring count will begin decreasing by one every fourth second. To make up for that, the player can pick up Rings along the race tracks. if Super Sonic's Ring count hits zero however, Sonic will de-transform and begin running on foot again until he can get more Rings and transform again.

In gameplay, Super Sonic will perform the Super Sonic Boost whenever he collects sixty Rings. In this state, he constantly moves at 180 Speed, and can crash through obstacles and barricades without slowing down. However, this Super Sonic Boost cannot be disengaged manually, and it makes Super Sonic burns through five Rings per second, meaning it first cease when Sonic reverts back to normal. Also, instead of using Gravity Points to use Gravity Control and Gravity Dive, Super Sonic uses Rings. However, these gravity actions will burn through his Ring count at a multiplied rate.

Sonic Free Riders[]

File:SuperSonicFreeRiders.jpg

Super Sonic in Sonic Free Riders.

In Sonic Free Riders, Super Sonic is once more a Super State that Sonic can achieve by using the Chaos Emeralds Extreme Gear. To unlock this Extreme Gear, the player must get an S Rank on all the missions in World Grand Prix Mode.

When beginning a race with the Chaos Emerald, Sonic will start out by riding his Blue Star, with zero Rings in his possession. Once Sonic collects thirty Rings from the race track however, he will automatically transform into Super Sonic. Unlike as in previous Sonic Riders titles however, Super Sonic will not begin losing Rings after transforming.

In gameplay, Super Sonic has unlimited Air in his Air Tank. Also, when performing the Kick Dash, the player will initiate the Super Sonic Boost. While boosting, Super Sonic will be moving at 200 Speed. He will also be invulnerable, capable of barging through obstacles, and able to perform high-Rank tricks without much effort. However, the Super Sonic Boost cannot be disengaged manually and it drain Sonic's Ring count of three-to-four Rings every second it is active. To make up for that, the player can pick up Rings along the race tracks. If Super Sonic's Ring count hits zero however, Sonic will de-transform and resume riding his Extreme Gear until he can get thirty more Rings and transform again.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

File:Super Sonic STH2006.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic was revived as Super Sonic when Princess Elise used the Chaos Emeralds to bring Sonic back to life. With the threat of Solaris at large, Super Sonic passed some of his powers onto Shadow and Silver, which allowed them to transform them into Super Shadow and Super Silver. Together, the trio of Super State users defeated Solaris and saved time itself from destruction.

In this game, Super Sonic only appears as one of the three playable characters (the other being Super Shadow and Super Silver) used to fight Solaris in the game's Last Episode. To unlock this fight, the player must complete the other three episodes in the game. During the fight, the player can switch between controlling Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver by pressing Template:Triangle Button (PS)/Template:Y Button (Xbox). When beginning the fight, the three characters start out with fifty Rings each. However, the characters' Ring counts will decrease by one each second; if one of their Ring counts hit zero during the boss battle, the character will de-transform and lose a life. Like in Sonic Adventure 2, to replenish a character's Ring count, the player must switch characters for a while: while one of the characters fights Solaris, the other two characters will stay on standby while their Ring counts slowly replenish themselves.

In gameplay, Super Sonic will not be invulnerable to Solaris' attacks. Instead, he will lose ten Rings every time he is hit. Other than that, Super Sonic can dash around the boss arena with the Turbo Boost. He is also able to perform the Arrow of Light which, when fully charged, is the only move in Super Sonic's arsenal that can damage Solaris.

Sonic Rivals[]

In Sonic Rivals, Super Sonic made an appearance on two of the collectible cards in the game. The first card (nr. 145) depicts Sonic Channel's artwork of Super Sonic while the second one (nr. 146) depicts the artwork of Super Sonic from Sonic Heroes.

Mario & Sonic series[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Sonic is Sonic's Final Smash. This game marks the first time since Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles that Sonic could become Super Sonic in any level instead of just in a final battle. Upon activation, he shouts "Now I'll show you!" before transforming, the Chaos Emeralds briefly appearing before the transformation. Here, he is bound by a fifteen-second time limit. When Sonic goes super, he can fly around, almost uncontrollably, hitting every opponent that comes into contact. Unlike in other games, Super Sonic is also invulnerable to the Blast Zone and thus cannot be KOed via suicide. Because of the high damage, knockback, juggling potential (allowing multiple hits on an opponent), and long lasting transformation (allowing multiple KOs), Super Sonic in Brawl is considered one of the most powerful Final Smashes in the whole series. In addition, Super Sonic is available as a collectible Trophy and Sticker:

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Super Sonic returned as Sonic's Final Smash. It is nearly identical to how it is performed and works in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, except Super Sonic was weakened from Brawl to balance the Final Smash, and his activation line was changed to "Super Sonic style!" (part of a line taken from Sonic Generations: "Time to scramble some Eggman, Super Sonic style!" to be exact). In addition, Super Sonic is available as a collectible Trophy in the Wii U version.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Sonic appears Sonic's Final Smash once more. In this game, when executing this Final Smash, Super Sonic flies back and forth around the arena several times, knocking any opponents he hits higher and higher into the air until they get knocked off-screen. Unlike past installments in the series, the player only has control over Super Sonic's vertical movement. In addition to this, Super Sonic appears as a spirit. He is a Legendary class primary spirit and is a Grab Type.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood[]

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Sonic became Super Sonic using the Chaos Emeralds he had collected on his journey in order to fight Pir'Oth Ix's Super State. After defeating Ix, Sonic reverted back to his original form.

In this game, Super Sonic is only playable against the final boss of the game: Imperator Ix. In gameplay, due to the RPG nature of the game, Super Sonic's existence is not bound by a Ring count. Super Sonic also possess a vast amount of HP, measuring in several thousand points. However, he is not invulnerable to damage. He can also only attack with the Super Sonic POW Move. However, if pulled off correctly, his POW Move can inflict over 9999 points of damage.

Sonic Unleashed[]

File:SuperSonic Unleashed.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Unleashed.

In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic went Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds after he got caught in the grip of Dr. Eggman's latest mech while attacking Eggman's space armada. Demolishing Eggman's fleet, Super Sonic cornered the doctor onboard the Chaos Energy Cannon. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a trap set by Eggman, and Super Sonic ended up caught in an energy field that robbed him of the seven Chaos Emeralds and his Super State, which Eggman then used to awaken Dark Gaia. Much later, upon standing face-to-face with Perfect Dark Gaia, Sonic turned into Super Sonic with the Emeralds again so he could help Chip's Gaia Colossus defeat the monstrosity. Although the heroes won the fight, Super Sonic was left so exhausted that he fainted, leaving it to Chip to rescue Sonic and return him home.

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the player only plays as Super Sonic during the battle against Perfect Dark Gaia. In this version of the game, the Gaia Colossus will act as Super Sonic's support by keeping Perfect Dark Gaia distracted with a fist fight. Also, this time, Super Sonic's transformation does not have a time limit tied to a Ring count that slowly depletes. Instead, Super Sonic begins the fights with a partially empty Life Gauge that fills up when the player collects Rings and empties when Super Sonic takes a hit. If this Life Gauge empties completely, the player will lose a life. In gameplay, Super Sonic is not invulnerable either, and will take damage whenever he hits an obstacle or gets attacked by Perfect Dark Gaia. His only move is the Super Sonic Boost, which the player must use to reach Perfect Dark Gaia, pick up Rings during the fight, and damage the tentacles on the force-field surrounding Perfect Dark Gaia. Also, at the end of the boss battle, Super Sonic will engage in a Real-Time Interaction where he attacks Perfect Dark Gaia's hands in order to free the Gaia Colossus from its grasp.

Supertransformsonic

Super Sonic getting ready to fight Perfect Dark Gaia.

In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, Super Sonic is only playable against the final boss of the game: Perfect Dark Gaia. In this version of the game, only he combats Perfect Dark Gaia. When the boss fight begins, Super Sonic will have twelve Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one every two seconds. For fighting the decreasing Ring count, the player can pick up the Rings that appear throughout the boss battle. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the boss battle however, Sonic will revert back to normal and lose a life. On the gameplay side of things, Super Sonic is not invulnerable here, as he will lose ten Rings each time Perfect Dark Gaia attacks him. That aside, Super Sonic is able to use the Turbo Boost and deflect Perfect Dark Gaia's energy shots. He is also able to use the Super Sonic Boost to damage Perfect Dark Gaia when he is locked onto one of its eyes, although this move costs ten Rings to use each time. Furthermore, when using the Super Sonic Boost, the player has to guide Super Sonic past meteors in order land a succesful hit on Perfect Dark Gaia; hit any meteors along the way, and the Super Sonic Boost gets canceled out, thus forcing the player to try attacking it again.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4[]

Episode I[]

File:Super Sonic the Hedgehog 4.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, Super Sonic appears as an playable feature that can be unlocked after obtaining all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. Once unlocked, Sonic gains the ability to turn into Super Sonic in most of the game's Acts (except for boss battles) whenever the player presses Template:Triangle Button (PS)/PSSquareButton/Template:Y Button (Xbox)/XboxX while in possession of at least fifty Rings. After Sonic transforms however, the player's Ring count will begin depleting by one for each second Super Sonic is active; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will turn back to normal.

In gameplay, Super Sonic has all his abilities from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, except that he can now also breathe underwater, force slot machines to give Jackpots, and illuminate the dark areas in Lost Labyrinth Zone Act 2. In addition, his Spin Dash can destroy certain enemies that Sonic cannot destroy otherwise. Finally, when Super Sonic destroys a Badnik, the player receives 400 points instead of the standard hundred. There is also an achievement called "Golden Flash" on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of the game, which requires all Zones to be completed with Super Sonic.

Completing the game with all seven Chaos Emeralds will also make Super Sonic appear during the game's ending cutscene.

Episode II[]

File:SuperSonicStH4Ep2.png

Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, Super Sonic is once again a unlockable transformation that Sonic can achieve in the game. To unlock Sonic's Super State, the player must collect all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. From then on, Sonic can turn into Super Sonic in any of the game's Acts (including boss battles) whenever the player presses Template:Triangle Button (PS)/Template:Y Button (Xbox) while in possession of at least fifty Rings. While Sonic is transformed however, the player's Ring count will drop by one Ring per second; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will turn back to normal. Super Sonic will similarly revert back to normal whenever the player performs a Tag Action (namely the Rolling Combo, Copter Combo, or Submarine Combo) with Tails.

In gameplay, Super Sonic has all his abilities from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I. In addition, when fighting in boss battles, Super Sonic can do double damage to all the bosses. There is also an achievement called "A Golden Wave" on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of the game, which requires all bosses to be defeated with Super Sonic, although such a feat is not easily achieved due to the bosses attack patterns, the limited amount of Rings during a boss battle, and the game's reliance on Tag Actions.

Sonic Colors[]

File:Super Sonic Sonic Colors.jpg

Super Sonic in the Wii version of Sonic Colors.

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors, Super appears as a playable feature that can be unlocked in the game. To unlock Super Sonic, one must first collect all Special Rings in the game, which will unlock all the Acts in the Sonic Simulator. By completing all the Acts in the Sonic Simulator, the player will acquire the seven Chaos Emeralds, which in turn will unlock a "Super Sonic" mode in the Options Satellite. By enabling this mode, Sonic gains the ability to turn into Super Sonic during regular Acts (boss battles not included), although there are certain sections during the Acts where he cannot transform. It also makes Super Sonic visible on the game's Area Maps. To transform into Super Sonic during Acts, the player has to perform the following actions while in possession of at least fifty Rings:

Wii Remote Wii Remote Sideways Classic Style GameCube Controller
Shake Wii Remote Shake Wii Remote Template:R Button (Wii Classic) Template:Z Button (GameCube)

After Sonic transforms, the player's Ring count will begin depleting by one for each second Super Sonic is active; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will turn back to normal. While Sonic is transformed, a remix of "Reach for the Stars" will play and the Wisp icon on the Wisp Gauge will be replaced with an image of the seven Chaos Emeralds.

In the gameplay of the Wii version of Sonic Colors, Super Sonic possesses the standard invincibility, increased speed and acceleration, and a heightened jump as tall as Super Sonic's regular Double Jump. He also has the Super Sonic Boost, limitless energy in the Boost Gauge to fuel his Super Sonic Boost with, immunity to flinching, and the ability to destroy Black Mounds and other objects that are normally only destroyed with a Color Power by walking into them. The player is also automatically rewarded with 2,000 "Super Sonic Bonus" points every few seconds while Super Sonic is active, and when performing a Trick Action after going off a Trick Ramp, the announcer skips directly to the point reward (which normally requires a few midair tricks to get). While the "Super Sonic" option is active however, the player will be unable to utilize any Wisp and their Color Power (except for the White Wisps and their Boost). The Acts' routes are likewise altered to accommodate Super Sonic's limitations.

File:SuperSonic soniccolours.png

Super Sonic in the DS version of Sonic Colors.

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, Sonic went Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds he had come upon in order to stop the Nega-Mother Wisp's rampage. After a grueling battle, Super Sonic managed to defeat Nega-Mother Wisp and return her to her normal Mother Wisp state.

In the Nintendo DS version of the game, Super Sonic is only playable against the final boss, the Nega-Mother Wisp. To access this boss, the player must have collected all the Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages and cleared the main storyline. When the boss fight begins, Super Sonic will have fifty Rings in his possession. However, his Ring count will be decreasing by one every second. To compensate for this, the player can pick up the Rings that appear throughout the boss battle. Should Super Sonic's Ring count hit zero during the boss battle however, Sonic will return to normal and lose a life. On the gameplay side of things, Super Sonic cannot take damage under any circumstances. However, the Nega-Mother Wisp's attacks can still slow him down and knock him backward. Super Sonic's only attack in this boss battle is the Super Sonic Boost, which he can use to knock back projectiles to disable the Nega-Mother Wish and then land a critical hit on her.

Sonic Generations[]

Super Sonics (Sonic Generations)

Classic and Modern Super Sonic in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.

In the console/PC versions of Sonic Generations, during their battle with the Time Eater, Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic achieved their respective Super States with the Chaos Emeralds from Modern Sonic's dimension after getting words of encouragement from their friends and allies. Together, the Super Sonics defeated the Time Eater and restored order to their respective universes.

In the gameplay of the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the player plays as Modern Super Sonic alongside Classic Super Sonic when battling the Time Eater. When beginning the fight, the Super Sonics start out with fifty Rings in their possession. However, the Super Sonics' Ring count decreases roughly by one each second. To compensate for this, there will be Rings throughout the boss battle for the player to pick up. If they lose all their Rings though, the Sonics will power down and lose a life. During the boss battle, Modern Super Sonic will be invulnerable to all harm and can perform both the Super Sonic Boost and the Super Sonic Missile. The player can also switch places with Classic Super Sonic by pressing Template:Y Button (Xbox)/Template:Triangle Button (PS).

After beating the final boss in the console/PC version, the player earns the Super Sonic Skill. When equipped to Modern Sonic, this Skill will allow the player to transform into Modern Super Sonic in regular Stages by pressing Template:Y Button (Xbox)/Template:Triangle Button (PS) after collecting fifty Rings. In regular Stages, Modern Sonic possesses invulnerability, quicker acceleration, a higher jump, the Super Sonic Boost, and limitless Boost Gauge energy for as long as he is transformed. However, he loses roughly two Rings per second while transformed, and once his Ring count hits zero, he will de-transform. In addition, using the Super Sonic Boost on linear paths causes Modern Super Sonic to lose Rings at a substantially faster rate (roughly eight per second). Also, while Modern Super Sonic can pick up Orange Wisps on Planet Wisp, using their Color Power will cause him to-de-transform. If (normal) Sonic, has fifty or more Rings, but has a Wisp, the Color Power will be activated first. In this game, all of Modern Super Sonic's attacks have a golden aura.

Classic and Modern Super 3ds

Classic and Modern Super Sonic in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the Sonics achieved their Super States with the Chaos Emeralds from Modern Sonic's dimension to defeat the Time Eater after Modern Tails and Classic Tails put themselves in harms way to help the Sonics. Joining forces, the Super Sonics destroyed the Time Eater, thus undoing the damage it had done to their universes.

In the gameplay of the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the player can only play as Modern Super Sonic during the boss battle with the Time Eater, which gets unlocked once all the game's stages are cleared and all seven Chaos Emeralds are obtained. The Super Sonics begin this boss fight with fifty Rings and will lose one Ring from their Ring count per second during the fight; like before, losing all Rings during this battle will cost the player a life. Luckily, there will be Rings throughout the boss battle to sustain the Super Sonics with. Also, during the battle, Modern Super Sonic will be invulnerable to all harm and be able to perform the Super Sonic Boost.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2013)[]

Super Sonic only appears in the 2013 re-release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Once the player enables the Max Emeralds to seven in the Level Select menu, the conditions of unlocking Super Sonic is the same to that of the Mega Drive titles (collect all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages and press the jump button during a jump with fifty rings in hand). Additionally, the player can instantly transform into Super Sonic by breaking the S monitor placed in Debug Mode.

Sonic Lost World[]

In both the Wii U/PC and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, Super Sonic is a bonus feature that the player can obtain over the course of the game.

File:Slw 2016-06-02 21-20-21-714.png

Super Sonic in the Wii U/PC version of Sonic Lost World.

In the Wii U/PC version of the game, to unlock Super Sonic, the player has to obtain all the Red Star Rings in the game. This will in turn unlock the Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic. From then on, whenever the player collects at least fifty Rings in a Zone (except for the Lava Mountain Zone 4), an icon with the Chaos Emeralds will light up on the top of the Wii U GamePad's screen. Touching this icon during a Zone will transform Sonic into Super Sonic. After Sonic transforms however, the player's Ring count will begin depleting by one each second. Should the Ring count hit zero, Super Sonic will revert back to normal. He can also de-transform by touching the Chaos Emeralds' icon on the GamePad's screen again. In terms of gameplay, Super Sonic has most of his standard abilities, including invincibility and enhanced speed and acceleration, along with his standard weaknesses to things like falling into bottomless pits and crushing. However, he does not gain additional jumping height. In return, his Spin Dash gets replaced with the Super Sonic Boost which can be used for as long as the player likes, and he gains the ability to draw in Rings by running. All perks aside though, Super Sonic has limitations in gameplay as well. In boss battles, his attacks do not inflict extra damage, nor is he immune to being fazed by attacks. Also, the player cannot turn into Super Sonic during Super-Speed Stages or while on clouds.

File:SuperSonicLostWorld3DS.png

Super Sonic in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, to unlock Super Sonic, the player must collect all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. After that, an icon featuring the Chaos Emeralds will light up in the upper left corner of the Touch Screen whenever the player is in possession of at least fifty Rings. Touching this icon during any Zone or boss battle will in turn transform Sonic into Super Sonic. However, it should be noted that Super Sonic cannot be used to deal the final boss the final blow. After Sonic transforms however, the player's Ring count will begin depleting by one each second. Should the Ring count hit zero, Super Sonic will revert back to normal. In terms of gameplay, Super Sonic possesses enhanced speed and acceleration, invincibility, the ability to draw in Rings, and an heightened jump. However, he still retains his Spin Dash maneuver over the Super Sonic Boost. Other than that, he has the same weaknesses as his Wii U counterpart.

In both versions of Sonic Lost World, Super Sonic cannot use the Wisps' Color Powers. Although he can obtain Wisps, activating their Color Power will cause him to revert back to normal, just like in Sonic Generations.

Sonic Runners[]

File:SuperSonicRunners.png

Super Sonic in Sonic Runners.

In Sonic Runners, Dr. Eggman attempted to take control of Sonic with a Mind Control Ray powered by the drained Chaos Emeralds' chaos energy. However, when the ray hit Sonic, who was holding the Chaos Emeralds, the Emeralds negated it by reabsorbing their energy, which in turn turned Sonic into Super Sonic. Using his superpowers, Super Sonic proceeded to destroy Eggman's mind-control weapon.

Sonic Forces[]

File:Modern Super Sonic in Sonic Forces at Green Hill.jpg

Super Sonic in Sonic Forces.

In Sonic Forces, Sonic the Hedgehog can transform into Super Sonic in regular Stages. This feature can be unlocked in the game via a future patch and through a DLC that was made available on 22 December 2017.[8][9] The DLC was stated to be free until 23 January 2018, after which it was meant to be payable. However, it was later announced the DLC would remain free starting from 24 January 2018.[10]

In gameplay, the player has to enable Super Sonic on the stage information screen in order to play as him. For then to transform into Super Sonic during a Stage, the player needs to collect fifty Rings; once the player gets the fiftieth Ring, Sonic will automatically transform. After transforming however, the player's Ring count will decrease by roughly one every second; if the Ring count hits zero, Sonic will revert back to normal. Sonic also de-transforms when engaging in a Real-Time Interaction and will then transform back once it is finished.

Much like in Sonic Generations, Sonic, as Super Sonic, possesses enhanced speed, higher jumping skills, invincibility, the Super Sonic Boost, and limitless Boost Gauge energy. However, the Super Sonic Boost will not drain the player's Ring count more quickly. Super Sonic cannot be used during boss battles or to participate in rankings.

Powers and abilities[]

Super Sonic is easily one of the most powerful beings in the Sonic series, having defeated titanic robots, fearsome monsters, forces of nature, other Super State users and even powerful deities. Due to being infused with the seven Chaos Emeralds' power, Super Sonic accordingly commands ultimate power and has access to unlimited energy.[11][12]

File:Vlc 2016-07-17 18-09-00-536.png

Super Sonic piercing Perfect Dark Gaia's middle eye.

As Super Sonic, Sonic's innate abilities far surpasses his normal ones.[1][13] His strength has been increased to such levels that he can plow through large robots, barriers and Eggman’s space armada without slowing down, break enormous metal restraints without effort, and even knock back Perfect Dark Gaia whose size is on par with a mountain. His trademark super speed has been enhanced dramatically too, approaching the speed of light.[1][14][15] He is similarly capable of making lightning-fast, but precise dashes. He also has improved reflexes and agility to match his improved movements and can jump higher as well. Like the traditional Super State, Sonic gains new abilities in this form too, including high-speed run-flight[1] and virtual invulnerability to harm,[16][17] although his invulnerability can be bypassed if he is hit by something with enough force, like attacks from Solaris, the Egg Salamander and Perfect Dark Gaia.

File:Sonic2app 2016-07-07 18-51-26-830.png

Super Sonic using Chaos Control alongside Super Shadow

Capable of manipulating chaos energy in his Super State, Super Sonic is able to freely perform different Chaos Powers, such as shields that can deflect the enemy’s attacks and Chaos Control which allows him to bend time and space to his will, the latter of which is powerful enough to allow him teleport objects as large as the Space Colony ARK with Super Shadow's help. He can also shoot highly destructive waves of golden energy, cloak himself in a fiery aura and then launch himself forward with increased speed and enormous force in order to ram opponents or blast through/knock back attacks, and charge projectiles with energy before shooting them. He can also use his Chaos Powers to absorb blue light to amplify his attacks. He can even combine his Chaos Powers with similar techniques to amplify their size and power; as an example, he can combine his signature Super Sonic Boost with another Super Sonic Boost user's or even Burning Blaze's Burning Fire Boost in order to deliver stronger impacts. Super Sonic can also pass his chaos energy onto others, thereby allowing them to achieve Super States of their own while maintaining his own.[18][19]

Due to the positive chaos energy which empowers Super Sonic, he is able to neutralize negative chaos energy and therefore turn people possessed by pure rage back to normal, like when he reverted Perfect Chaos back to normal while purifying it of its anger and rage.[20]

Like in his natural state, Super Sonic can utilize the Spin Attack, a technique where he curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk and directs himself at his targets. Due to Sonic being in a Super State, this technique's power is greatly amplified as a result. With it, Super Sonic can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed. Highly adept in its usage, Super Sonic can utilize several variants of the Spin Attack for both ground- and aerial maneuvers, including the Spin Dash, Spin Jump, Homing Attack, Focused Homing Attack and the super-charged Light Speed Attack.

Weaknesses[]

Super Sonic can only stay transformed for a short time without sustainment from Ring Energy, as a Super State consumes tremendous amounts of energy.[1][13] Extensive usage will also put him at risk of disappearing entirely.[21] Super Sonic can also be reverted back to his base form when his power is forcibly extracted from him, such as when Eggman trapped Super Sonic onboard the Chaos Energy Cannon in an energy field and drained him of his power.[22]

Comics[]

Sonic the Comic[]

File:STC85-SuperSonic.jpg

Super Sonic from Sonic the Comic #85.

In Sonic the Comic, the UK publication by Fleetway Editions, Super Sonic was again a powered-up form of Sonic's, but in this series he was also portrayed as an evil entity, bent on destruction. Sonic frequently battled to prevent his transformations into Super Sonic, since this put innocent people (including Sonic's friends) in great danger. Sonic is able to transform into Super Sonic when he is either exposed to chaos energy or when he is under extreme stress/anger.

During the series, Sonic was separated from Super Sonic, who unwittingly contributed to the downfall of Doctor Robotnik. Shortly after this, Super Sonic lost his memory and his powers, becoming peaceful for a time. Eventually, however, he regained his memory and powers again, and returned to his evil self. Sonic was forced to re-merge with Super Sonic in order to keep the demon under control.

Archie Comics[]

File:Super Sonic transparent.png

Super Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #183.

In the Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs, Super Sonic is Sonic the Hedgehog's super form, which he can assume when absorbing seven Chaos Emeralds or something with equivalent amounts of Chaos energy to them.

Super Sonic's first appearance in the comics was in Sonic the Hedgehog #4 to battle the Universalamander: In the subsequent years, Sonic would assume this form again to battle Hyper Knuckles, Master Mogul, Perfect Chaos and the Finalhazard, and as well briefly when trying to stop a time abnormality engulfing Knothole.

When Sonic was thrust into deep space, he tried using the red Chaos Emeralds of planet Thoraxia to become Super Sonic and defeat the Bzzzz. Rather than transforming into Super Sonic however, his powered-up form became a separate, malevolent entity. Before Sonic's rogue Super State could kill him though, he ran out of energy and dissipated. When Enerjak later resurfaced, Sonic used the Master Emerald to become Super Sonic and stop the demi-god. Sonic would soon after assume his Super State two times more, both times to reverse the effects of the Genesis Wave, though the latter attempt would cause the Multiverse to reboot.

Following the Super Genesis Wave, Super Sonic became nearly identical to his game counterpart.

IDW Publishing[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Super Sonic is the Super State of Sonic the Hedgehog. In this media, Super Sonic's past follows its game counterpart's up until after the events of Sonic Forces.

Animation[]

Sonic X[]

File:Sx-supersonic.png

Super Sonic in Sonic X.

In the anime series Sonic X and its comic series published by Archie Comics, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic using only the seven Chaos Emeralds. In this media, Super Sonic's eyes are orange instead of red.

Sonic's first transformation into Super Sonic occurred during his fight with the E-99 Eggsterminator. With the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic turned into Super Sonic and made short work of the Eggsterminator. Sonic would later transform into Super Sonic to defeat Perfect Chaos, stop the Space Colony ARK from impacting the earth alongside Super Shadow, and then to return to his home dimension. Back home, Sonic would become Super Sonic three times more to battle Dark Oak and his legions of Metarex.

In the comics, Sonic would become Super Sonic to stop Chaosbot from destroying Station Square.

Theme songs[]

  • "Super Sonic Racing" composed by Richard Jacques and performed by TJ Davis - Played when playing as Super Sonic in Radiant Emerald in Sonic R.
  • "Open Your Heart" by Crush 40 - Played during the final battle of Sonic Adventure against Perfect Chaos. The song describes the rage of Chaos.
  • "Live and Learn" by Crush 40 - Played during the final battle of Sonic Adventure 2 against Finalhazard. It can also be described as the shared theme of both Super Sonic and Super Shadow.
  • "What I'm Made Of..." by Crush 40 - Played during the final battle of Sonic Heroes against Metal Overlord. Although considered a theme for Metal Sonic, the song clearly references both characters. Such lines as "my energy" refers to Metal Sonic copying Sonic's (as well as the other members of each teams in Sonic Heroes) energy and transforms into Super Sonic to show Metal Sonic, exactly what he is made of, hence the title of the song.
  • "His World" (instrumental version) composed by Tomoya Ohtani - Played during the final battle of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) against Solaris Phase 2.
  • "Endless Possibility" (instrumental version) composed by Tomoya Ohtani - Played during the final battle of Sonic Unleashed against Dark Gaia.
  • "Reach for the Stars" (instrumental version) composed by Tomoya Ohtani - Played whenever Sonic transforms into Super Sonic in Sonic Colors. A remixed instrumental played when Super Sonic is fighting the Nega-Mother Wisp.
  • "Super Sonic (Wonder World ver.)" - Played whenever Sonic transforms into Super Sonic in Sonic Lost World.
  • "Fist Bump" (instrumental version) composed by Tomoya Ohtani - Played whenever Sonic transforms into Super Sonic in Sonic Forces.

Merchandise[]

The exclusive version of the modern Super Sonic statue by First 4 Figures.

To promote the release of Sonic the Fighters in Japan, a soft toy of Super Sonic was available as part of a set with all of the other characters from the game, only available to be won from claw crane machines. Part of the SegaSonic the Hedgehog brand in Japan, several items related to Super Sonic were produced such as coloring pencils, stickers and a pin. First 4 Figures released a miniature 2" figurine of Super Sonic in his original design, and two statues; one in his original design set in Chemical Plant and a modern one set during Sonic Adventure. Jazwares re-released an action figure of Sonic by Toy Island, but recolored it yellow to resemble Super Sonic. The spines and eye shape were unchanged though, making it innacurate. It was eventually re-released several years later with the spines correctly pointing upwards, however the eye shape was still unchanged. Jazwares also produced smaller 3" and 6" action figures of Super Sonic. Kellytoy released the first soft toy of Super Sonic in his modern design, and it uniquely used a golden color material instead of yellow for Super Sonic's fur. Great Eastern Entertainment produced a soft toy, hat, mug, and other various items of Super Sonic. Tomy produced several gashapon items of Super Sonic, and a 12" plush. Diamond Select Toys, Jakks Pacific, GNF Toyz and Shinobi 7 are all set to release merchandise of Super Sonic.

Trivia[]

  • The name of this form is a play on the term "supersonic".
  • Super Sonic is widely viewed as an homage to Dragon Ball Z and the Super Saiyan transformations within it. When asked if comments about this were received from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, former Sega executive producer Yuji Naka smiled and said no.[23]
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it is possible for Super Sonic to appear in the game's 2P Play by causing a Game Over or by completing the game and then selecting 2P via the Options menu (any Chaos Emeralds the player has in the previous game will be carried over), although his sprite would appear in its messy form.
  • Although Super Sonic's bio on Sonic Channel states that Sonic burns through energy in order to maintain this form (consecutively shown to be Ring energy), there has been numerous times in which Super Sonic had appeared without any apparent Ring consumption displayed (which is either not shown at all or is replaced by a life bar like in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed). In Sonic R, the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic the Fighters he can even stay in his Super State indefinitely. Similarly, Sonic has been able to transform into Super Sonic with Ring amounts below the fifty-Ring minimum like in Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 3. The true ending of Sonic Advance also shows Sonic still as Super Sonic after a few days, though it is unknown what occurred over those days.
  • There is a glitch in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when Sonic finishes an Act after passing the Goal Plate or opening the Capsule. If he jumps while having fifty Rings, he will turn into Super Sonic, but he does not transform and will instead do a running animation in the air without going on. Sometimes the results screen will not appear and the player may have to restart the game.
  • When Sonic transforms into Super Sonic in Sonic Adventure, his Crystal Ring disappears, and in Sonic Adventure 2, his Flame Ring, Bounce Bracelet, and Magic Hand disappears. Strangely, his only visible upgrades in Sonic Adventure are the Light Speed Shoes and in Sonic Adventure 2 the Light Shoes, respectively.
  • The Wii version of Sonic Colors marked the first time Super Sonic is playable in a 3D platformer on any stage. Previously, Super Sonic was only used for the final boss.
  • A Super Sonic 3-inch figure was released by Jazwares, although the figure has black lines going down his eyes, in the the actual games he does not have the black lines. Later releases of this figure, though, had those lines removed.
  • In the beta version of Sonic Colors (Wii version), there was going to be a special music track for playing the final boss with Super Sonic. However, it was excluded in the final version, as Super Sonic did not make it as playable in bosses. However, the music is still programmed in the system.
  • Sonic Adventure was originally going to have Super Sonic playable in every stage, but was scrapped.
    • The later successor of it had also planned to have Super Sonic in the multiplayer, but remained unused.[24]
  • Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) originally had a gem in which the player could transform Sonic into Super Sonic. The gem was not included in the game's final release.
  • Sonic Generations is the first game since Sonic & Knuckles to feature Super Sonic as a bonus character and is the first game since Sonic Unleashed to make him relevant to the plot. It is also the first mainstream game without a dedicated theme for Super Sonic (although Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I's theme plays when the two Sonics transform in the cutscene before the final fight against the Time Eater and before defeating him with their final attack ).
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Sonic Forces and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic before the Chaos Emeralds enter his body.
  • In most Sonic games, Sonic gets an extra life for gaining one-hundred Rings. As the Ring-draining mechanic while using Super Sonic allows for the player to reach the 100-Ring mark multiple times, the games do not allow Sonic to get an extra life from the same 100 after once.
  • Only three games make it possible for the player to de-transform from Super Sonic at will. These are Sonic Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Ep II, and Sonic Lost World. In Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World (Nintendo 3DS), it is only possible by using a Wisp's Color power while in the Super State. In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, it can be done anytime simply by performing a tag action with Tails. In Sonic Lost World (Wii U version), it can be done anytime, with or without using a Color power.
    • However, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (and its lock-on with Sonic & Knuckles), when Super Sonic enters a Bonus Stage (as long as he has at least fifty [Sonic 3 only]/second Rings when touching a star point), he also de-transforms to his normal form.
  • In the games Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (and it's lock-on with Sonic & Knuckles), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (and it's lock-on with Sonic & Knuckles) and Sonic Lost World, Super Sonic is not completely animated. The same applies to Hyper Sonic, who only appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
  • In Sonic Generations, there is unused text for a bio of Super Sonic in the Collection Room. It is unknown why it was not used.[25]
  • Super Sonic was originally going to appear in the Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, the idea and the Zone were scrapped due to time constraints.[26]
  • Sonic Forces marked the first time that Super Sonic was added to a game as DLC.
