The Super Mushroom is power-up from the Super Mario series. Traditionally, it is about the size of "small" Mario. It has a white stalk below a red cap with white spots. Originally, it was shaped after a common mushroom, but since Super Mario Bros. 2, it gained a more cartoon-ish shape, with an almost-spherical cap and a stubby stalk. It has two eyes like most other power-ups.

The Mushroom is the most basic Mario power-up, and it is also among the most popular and most seen items. Winning three consecutive Mushroom cards from the slot-machine goal boxes at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros. 3 will earn the player two extra lives. In Mario Kart games, the first (and easiest) tracks belong to the Mushroom Cup.

These mushrooms were originally going to be called Magic Mushrooms. However, they decided that this was not such a good idea after all, since "Magic Mushroom" is the street name for the Psilocybin mushroom, a type of hallucinogenic drug.

Origin[]

Shigeru Miyamoto stated in an interview that the Super Mushroom was created by chance. The first sketches of Mario turned out to be too big, for which they were forced to shrink them. Then the development team thought it would be interesting to have Mario grow and shrink by eating a magic mushroom, like in Alice In Wonderland, where she ate a mushroom to make her grow after poison shrinks her. The mushrooms themselves were inspired by their association with magical worlds.[1]

In the Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros.[]

For this game they were known as Magic Mushrooms, and the powers they grant to the player would be retroactively applied to the game's title. Super Mushrooms emerge from certain Question Blocks when one is jumped at from are bumped from below. In doing so, the Super Mushroom begins to slide to the right. If Mario or Luigi touch a Magic Mushroom while in their Small form, they turn into their Super form, earning the player 1,000 points. While in their Super form, Mario or Luigi are double the size and can withstand an extra hit. Furthermore, Super Mario or Super Luigi can break bricks by jumping into them from below.

If Mario or Luigi are in their Super or Fire form, any ? Block normally containing a Super Mushroom instead has a Fire Flower, and touching a Magic Mushroom has no effect aside from giving the same number of points as when collected.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]

Magic Mushrooms act similarly as in Super Mario Bros.. However, Magic Mushrooms had their sprite redesigned to now depict a pair of eyes, something that they retain in all subsequent appearances, while still having the yellow cap with red spots like in Super Mario Bros.. The game introduces a variation of Magic Mushrooms, the Poison Mushroom, which has the opposite effect of damaging Mario or Luigi if touched.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Since this appearance, they have been named Super Mushrooms. There was also a change in which depending on what side of the block was hit, the Super Mushroom would start moving toward the opposite side. Just as before, Question Blocks with a Super Mushroom yield a different power-up if Mario or Luigi are in their Super form. Given that more powers were introduced, such as Super Leaves, certain Question Blocks instead yield a different power-up while Mario or Luigi are in their Super form.

Super Mushrooms are also an item usable from the inventory in the overworld. Such Super Mushrooms can be obtained from Toad Houses or by matching a pair of two Super Mushroom cards in the N-Mark Spade Panel minigame.

Like in Super Mario Bros., picking up a Super Mushroom is worth 1,000 points.

Super Mario Land[]

Super Mushrooms return as a power-up item, rewarding 1,000 points upon being picked up just like before.

Super Mario World[]

Super Mushrooms also allow Mario to break Spin Blocks by performing a Spin Jump. Since this game, the coloration of Super Mushrooms has been standardized as being a red mushroom cap with white spots. Picking up a Mushroom once again earns the player 1,000 points.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[]

Super Mushrooms appear as a power-up item once again. Due to the game's absence of a score, Super Mushrooms do not grant any points upon being collected.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

In Super Mario 64 DS, the mushrooms have the qualities of a Mega Mushroom. They can turn a player big and they can then crush enemies or destroy boulders or balls, and earn one ups when they reach the number eight, though it lasts only for a short amount of time. They can be found in Brick Blocks or Stakes in Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Hazy Maze Cave, Tall, Tall Mountain, and Tiny-Huge Island.

New Super Mario Bros. series[]

The Super Mushroom is a power-up item in every New Super Mario Bros. series title.

In the Mario & Luigi series[]

Super Mushrooms are one of the HP-restoring items. They are a slightly more effective variant of Mushrooms.

In the Super Smash Bros. series[]

The Super Mushroom is also an item in the Super Smash Bros. series, in which touching one makes the character larger temporarily. For Mario characters, this is larger than their Super form in the Mario franchise. Given that the Mario characters do not take on their Small form in the Super Smash Bros. series, using the Super Mushroom is essentially an enlargement of their Super form. Template:Sectstub

In the Mario Party series[]

Mushrooms have played a big role in the Mario Party series. They appear in various mini-games, such as Toadstool Titan, though its main role is as an item with numerous variations (such as the Golden Mushroom, Poison Mushroom, and Reverse Mushroom). In the original Mario Party, the Mushroom was part of a Mushroom Space which would either let you roll twice or skip your next move.

The Mushroom debuted as an item in Mario Party 2, and was Mario's item of choice in that game and Mario Party 3. When a character used the Mushroom, they roll 2 Dice Blocks (for a total of 2-20 spaces). If they roll the same numbers, they get 10 coins (20 coins for two "7's"). The Mushroom was replaced by the Mega Mushroom, the Mushroom Capsule/Mushroom Orb, Twice Candy, and Double Dice Set in Mario Party 4, Mario Party 5, Mario Party 6, Mario Party 7, Mario Party 8, Mario Party DS, and Mario Party Superstars. However, it returned as a separate item in Mario Party Superstars with the new effect of having the character roll a single die and adding 5 to the result. The effect of rolling 2 Dice Blocks (for a total of 2-20 spaces) and getting 10 coins for rolling the same numbers (in Mario Party Superstars) is instead for the Double Dice Set (returning item in Mario Party DS and Mario Party Superstars).

Crossover appearances[]

Animal Crossing series[]

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, the Super Mushroom was only available via DS Download Station for a limited time, shortly after the game's release. Like in Animal Crossing, the Super Mushroom reuses its design from Super Mario Bros..

Nintendogs series[]

In the Nintendogs series, the Super Mushroom is featured in the form of an item named Rubber Mushroom, an item under the Sports category. Like in earlier Animal Crossing games, the item depicts its appearance from Super Mario Bros..

Cameo appearances[]
