Subaru Kujou (九条 昴, Kujō Subaru) is a member of the New York Combat Revue's Star Division. They were formerly a member of the European Star Division.
Appearance[]
Subaru is an androgynous person of Japanese descent with chin length black hair and black eyes. They typically wear a purple jacket with a red tie, white undershirt, and purple shorts. They are almost always seen with a small black fan in their hand.
Their Star Division uniform is light purple. As a member of the Five-Rings warriors, Subaru has the Five-Ring mark on their back.
Personality[]
Subaru is a quiet, very secretive person. With almost nothing known about them besides their birthplace and name, Subaru keeps a lot of themselves hidden.
Subaru is very quiet, only speaking whenever they are asked to or when commenting on something that needs their experience. They have no issue with not saying anything and will typically meet Shinjiro with silence if he is silent.
Subaru does not identify as a man or a woman, they believe that gender means nothing in the grand scheme of things, and they are just Subaru and that is enough.
Subaru is very confident in their skills. As a former member of the European Star Division, they have years of experience on the battlefield and have no problem with tearing demons apart. Their ferocity is so great that before their episode, they comment they make no distinction between friend or foe.
However, Subaru's confidence leans heavily into arrogance. They have no issue with tearing down anyone who they feel is performing inadequately to their own standards. This is best seen with Rikaritta in Episode 5, where Subaru harshly criticizes Rika's dancing for Viva La Harlem, despite Rika doing her best.
Subaru also has issues with taking criticism. Due to their own high standards, the idea that their performance wasn't perfect can affect them heavily as seen throughout V when they perform at the Mercury Club and are unable to understand why no one enjoys their jazz performance, despite playing each note on the piano perfectly. This changes after their episode, where Subaru gives a much better performance, despite it not being perfect and preferring that Shinjiro also give a less than perfect performance alongside them.
Despite their harsh criticisms and high standards, Subaru cares very deeply for their comrades. This is best seen near the end of their episode where they believe that all of their friends were lost and they begin to cry, a rare expression of deep emotion from them, and then react harshly to their teasing about them crying before begrudgingly admitting they do care.
Subaru enjoys stargazing and playing the piano at the Mercury Club.
Background[]
Subaru's early life is shrouded in mystery. Their age and life before joining the European Star Division is unknown, and they rarely give any information about themselves.
It is known that Subaru was a member of the European Star Division alongside Ratchet Altair, Orihime Soletta and Reni Milchstraße and had a similar personality to their current perfectionist one. Ratchet recalls Subaru performed every mission perfectly and was very isolated from the rest of the division.
At some point after the dissolvement of the European Star Division, Subaru joined Ratchet as a member of the newly formed New York Combat Revue's Star Division and was a member by the time of Shinjiro Taiga's arrival in New York alongside Sagitta Weinberg.
If the player chooses Subaru as Shinjiro's love interest, it is revealed Subaru is a reincarnation of the Nameless Nun, a member of the original Five-Ring Warriors who had been in a romantic relationship with Shinjiro's previous life Koya Hijiri before sacrificing themselves to seal away Nobunaga.
