Red is the canon name of the protagonist of the Generation I games and is a Pokémon Trainer from Pallet Town, Kanto. He is the first character to be playable in the Pokémon series and his initial appearance is set in the Generation I main games. He has since then made various appearances in Pokémon media, including the Generation III remakes of Red, Green and Blue; FireRed and LeafGreen. Red became the official Kanto Pokémon League Champion. Red is also a non-playable character in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2 and White 2, Sun, and Moon, Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. He can be fought at Mt Silver (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver) and in the Pokémon Champion Tournament at Black 2 and White 2. Appearance[]Red has black, spiky hair and red eyes. Red, Green and Blue[]He also wears a red shirt over a white t-shirt along with blue jeans and white-red sneakers as well as a red and white cap with the symbol of a leaf on the left side of it. He also carried a brown backpack with a light black strap. FireRed and LeafGreen[]Red now has pale brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a black t-shirt that is covered by a red sleeveless shirt with the vest itself also having a white collar and stripe. He also wears blue jeans with his shoes black, red and white. He now has sweatbands around both his wrists and he now wears a cap that is red and white. Sun and Moon[]Red appears in Sun and Moon with a new outfit, which consists of a white T-shirt with red short sleeves and a logo, the number "96", blue jeans, red and white sneakers and a slightly redesigned cap. He also carries a new yellow backpack. He also appears older compared to the previous titles. He also wears a watch or sweatband of some kind around his left wrist. Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee![]Red's outfit is very similar to the original games, but now looks a bit more updated. As in Generation 1, he has spiky black hair and brown or red eyes. He wears a red sleeveless jacket with white pockets, the jacket itself now having been designed to look much shorter with a black t-shirt with white sleeves underneath. He also wears blue jeans, red and white sneakers and carries a brown backpack with black straps. Personality[]Red is a very serious person, especially when he battles. This can be seen easily because he seldom smiles. He is very quiet, usually only ever using ellipses (...) in the games. He is shown to be both loyal to his Pokémon and his cause, and seen by the fact that he always has the three potential starters on him, indicating whichever Pokémon he chose first has remained with him, and when he fought in the World of Light Trailer (Super Smash Brothers Ultimate) where he and his Pokémon were among the few to fight back against Galeem. Biography[]Template:Incomplete Red, Green and Blue[]In Red, Green and Blue, Red who is a curious, young boy aged eleven (with European releases giving his age as 10) from Pallet Town. He was also once friends with Blue, the grandson of Pallet Town's local Pokémon expert, Professor Oak but as revealed via the instruction manuels, Red gained an interest in Pokémon once Blue stopped playing with him, instead choosing to begin bullying him instead. However, this contradicts Professor Oak's claim in the games that the two have in fact been rivals since they were both infants. One day, as Red prepares to leave his home to begin his Pokémon journey, he is stopped from leaving the town by Oak who tells him he needs a Pokémon for his own protection. Upon being brought to the lab where Blue is, Oak gives the two a choice between the three Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Depending on the starter Pokémon Red picks, Blue will soon choose his own starter Pokémon but one that has a type advantage over Red's starter Pokémon. After both have chosen their respective Pokémon, they will battle one another with Blue wanting to challenge Red as he believes his starter Pokémon can beat Red's Pokémon. Once that has ended, Red makes his way to Kanto Route 1, eventually reaching Viridian City where he arrives at the Poke Mart to receive a Parcel that he then brings back to Oak in Pallet Town. With Blue arriving seconds later, Oak tells the two trainers about a dream of his when he was young which was to use his Pokémon to create a full guide on the Pokémon in the Kanto region but due to his old age, Oak can no longer accomplish his goal, something he wants both Red and Blue to do for him instead. Upon obtaining a Town Map from Daisy Oak, Professor Oak's granddaughter and Blue's older sister, Red leaves Pallet Town and begins traveling all over the Kanto region, capturing and training various Pokémon. He also starts gathering the eight Gym Badges by defeating the Gym Leaders and regularly meets Blue who usually challenges him to a battle, Blue being one step ahead of Red and showing up to stall Red's progress. During his journey, Red learns of a group of Pokémon thieves called Team Rocket. He first meets them when they're searching for and attempting to steal fossils inside Mt. Moon. Upon arriving in Cerulean City, Red heads north to the Nugget Bridge on Kanto Route 24 and defeats the Trainers with the last one being a Team Rocket Grunt who was hoping to recruit new members for the organization. He soon meets another Grunt hiding in the grounds of a house, having stolen the TM, Dig from a man who resides in Cerulean with his wife. Red soon discovers Team Rocket are plotting something and manages to gain access to their underground base which is hidden beneath Celadon City's Game Corner or Rocket Corner. His journey through the hideout brings him face-to-face with Giovanni, the boss and leader of Team Rocket whom Red defeats in battle, forcing Team Rocket to abandon their hideout in Celadon. Using the Silph Scope he'd obtained from Giovanni, Red heads into the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town and learns Mr. Fuji, the elderly caretaker is being held hostage by some Grunts. By defeating them, Red frees Mr. Fuji and causes the Rockets to flee from the Tower while also ensuring the ghost of the Marowak who Team Rocket also murdered, leaving her baby Cubone an orphan can finally head to the afterlife, her spirit having been calmed at last. Red heads into Saffron City and learns that Team Rocket has not only taken control of the city, presumably preventing the citizens from leaving their homes but also the Silph Company or Silph Co. with the group also planning on using the Master Ball, a Poke Ball that can catch any Pokémon without fail. He meets Giovanni in the Silph President's office and defeats him again, causing Giovanni to flee and end Team Rocket's control of Saffron, resulting in Saffron returning to normal. Having gotten seven Badges, Red heads to the Viridian City Gym to get his final badge where he discovers Giovanni is the Gym Leader he must defeat in order to get to the Elite Four in the Indigo Plateau. Red eventually prevails, earning the Earth Badge while Giovanni disbands Team Rocket, promising to go into solo training to become a better Trainer. After making it through the Kanto Victory Road and the Indigo Plateau, Red then challenges Kanto's Elite Four consisting of four trainers and a Champion. He defeats the Ice trainer Lorelei, the Fighting trainer Bruno, the Ghost Trainer Agatha and the Dragon Trainer Lance before he challenges the Champion who he soon discovers is none other than his rival, Blue who defeated the Elite Four before Red ever set foot in the Indigo Plateau, making Blue the Champion of Kanto. However, Blue's reign as Champion is short-lived as Red soon defeats him in battle, becoming the new Kanto Champion. After that, Red opts to continue on with his training rather than stay at the Indigo Plateau as a Champion. Yellow[]In Yellow, his story is very similar, except that now Red receives a Pikachu as his starter, the Pikachu being the same one Professor Oak caught when Red attempted to leave Pallet Town while Blue, his rival gets an Eevee. Gold and Silver and Crystal[]In Gold and Silver and Crystal, after becoming the Kanto Champion upon defeating his rival, Blue, Red became a wandering Trainer with his journey eventually taking him to Mt. Silver, a mountain located between Kanto and Johto where he spends his days and nights training his Pokémon team alone. He presumably remains there for three years and is also revealed to have become so distant from his mom that he does not talk to her via phone anymore. When the player character gets the opportunity to go to Kanto after defeating the Elite Four and Champion Lance, they can visit Red's house in Pallet Town with his mom greeting them and then telling them Red has been away for a long and that he hasn't called so she doesn't know where he is or what he's doing. She also reveals she worries about him, even though people say that no word is proof is he's doing fine. Talking to her again has her commenting that she worries about Red getting hurt or sick but he's a boy and she also voices her pride at the fact he's doing what he wants to do. Upon gaining access to Mt. Silver after collecting all 16 Gym Badges from both the Johto and Kanto regions, the player character can make their way through the mountain and ultimately challenge Red to a battle with Red disappearing whenever he's defeated. He has Pokémon similar to Ash of the anime (except for the fact that all three starters are fully evolved compared to Ash only having one fully evolved). FireRed and LeafGreen[]In FireRed and LeafGreen, he reappears as the protagonist (although this is a remake). In this saga, he has a female counterpart named Leaf. His story progresses the same as in the original games but after becoming Champion, Red travels to the Sevii Islands where he helps Bill's friend, Celio connect his Pokémon Network to the Hoenn region. During his time in the islands, Red discovers a small group of Team Rocket Grunts led by Executive Archer who are operating in a warehouse on Five Island. Red sneaks into the warehouse and defeats the Grunts before meeting Archer who accuses him of trying to sown distrust amongst the Grunts. Upon Red defeating him, Archer learns that Red possesses the Earth Badge which is proof Giovanni has officially disbanded Team Rocket. Even though the group are defeated, presumably fleeing the Sevii Islands, they announce their intention to revive Team Rocket once more and bring Giovanni back from his solo training. After that, Red continues on his journey and eventually becomes a wandering Trainer, disappearing from the public eye. He soon makes his way towards Mt. Silver, a mountain bordering Kanto and Johto and presumably spends three years residing there, training his Pokémon day and night while also becoming so distant from his Mom that he doesn't even talk to her via the phone anymore. His disappearance results in Lance replacing him as the new Pokémon Champion. HeartGold and SoulSilver[]Like in Pokémon's 'Gold' 'Silver' and 'Crystal', in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, once the player has earned all sixteen badges, they can battle Red on the top of Mt. Silver with the same set of Pokémon from the original titles. Every time he is defeated, he disappears but comes back once the Elite Four and Champion have been defeated. Black 2 and White 2[]In Black 2 and White 2, Red finally returns to public life when he participates in the Pokémon World Tournament, battling against the player character with three Pokémon. Even though the sprite/model he uses in battle is the same one from Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, his overhead model which is seen when he's first entering the arena shows that his hair which is brown is slightly longer than it was in the past. Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon[]In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Red who is now visibly older and wearing a new set of clothes travels to Alola along with Blue, the two former Champions having been invited to work as bosses of Alola's Battle Tree. When the player character first visits the Battle Tree, they will encounter Red and Blue and will battle one of them. After Red or Blue has been properly defeated, Red will reward the player by giving them a full set of Kanto starter Mega stones, allowing the player to Mega Evolve the Kanto starters in their party. Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee![]Red can be battled at the top of the Indigo Plateau, near the entrance after defeating at least 6 Master Trainers with the player character also having six Pokémon in their party. Similarly to HeartGold and SoulSilver, Red will rematch the player when he/she beats the Elite Four. Unlike the original games, Red like Blue completed their journeys and even defeated the Elite Four years before the player character began their journey. He can be challenged to a battle and like all the Master Trainer battles in Let's Go, Pikachu and Let's Go, Eevee, the player character must defeat Red without using any Items from their bag. Upon being defeated, Red grants the player the title of Battle Master before leaving. Like the other games, he will reappear for a rematch every time the player character has successfully beaten the Elite Four. Super Smash Bros. series[]Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]Red makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the Pokémon Trainer, he is accompanied by Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard and is a newcomer. He only talks when switching Pokémon and when he wins. He does not fight but instead is shown in the background commanding his Pokémon (using special-down will switch them during battle). In story mode he follows the character if he is being used until they get to a point where he is unable to continue, however he will be warped in front of the character at certain times. Each Pokémon he uses is different in weight and evolution. Squirtle is a light weight and is not evolved at all, Ivysaur is an averaged out middle weight and a has evolved once. Charizard is a heavy weight and is fully evolved.
Red is first introduced when Lucas bumps into him and both are surrounded by Primids. Red uses Squirtle (the only Pokémon available at the start of Red's appearance) to defeat them and continues to go search for more Pokémon (in which Lucas goes with him). They then go to the ruins to find Charizard and Ivysaur, but before they continue, they then are attacked by Wario, which they win. During the story, Red finds Ivysaur as a trophy (likely due to a lost battle with Charizard) and captures it with a Poke Ball, and battles Charizard and captures it as well. He and Lucas then reach the end if the ruins and battle Galeom who fell though the top. After winning, Galeom is revealed to be a Subspace Bomb and grabs Lucas and Red (the latter being knocked out). However Lucas frees them and they are saved by Meta Knight. They then go with Marth, Meta Knight and Ike. They then go to a mountain where a battle is taking place, which ends with an army from Subspace coming to attack. They manage to defeat them (with help from Mario, Link, Kirby, Pit, Yoshi and Ice Climbers). They then meet up with the heroes that were in the Halberd and the Bomb Factory. He (along with the others) go to subspace to defeat Master Hand. However he is defeated with the others by Tabuu. If he is found by King Dedede, Luigi and Ness he will go to fight Tabuu. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS[]Although Squirtle and Ivysaur are cut from the game, leaving only his Charizard to be solely playable, Red is demoted to assist trophy instead. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]Red and his three main starter Pokémon finally returns to be playable once again, with his female counterpart, Green, as a color swap.
