Rainbow is a British-American rock band that was formed in 1975, a joint initiative of Ritchie Blackmore and the American group Eleven. From 1968 was been Deep Purple 's guitarist Blackmore. Due to the highly flammable nature of Blackmore, he left that band and eventually made the album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbowwith Eleven. Shortly after the release of this album remained only singer Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore about of the original line up. The other members were replaced. Under more star drummer Cozy Powell was a member of the band. Initially, the band free basic hard rock marked by somewhat Gothic influences. Starting from 1978 changed the sound of Rainbow. In that year left the group for Black Sabbath Ronnie Dio and entered the former bass guitarist of Deep Purple and Roger Glover and producer to the group. From that point on, the Group tended more of the early metal -the pop music grafted rock.

The composition of Rainbow actually changed per album. Only fixed factor in the Group was Ritchie Blackmore. The Group was disbanded In 1984 , Blackmore and Glover returned to their old band Deep Purple. Blackmore left the band in 1993 and established a new version of Rainbow on, however not for long because soon after Blackmore along with his new wife Candice directive Knight 'Blackmore's Night', where they focus on medieval music.

Former members Rondinelli, Turner and Smith give hearing to the call of many fans and decided to Over The Rainbow again under the name joint to go on tour with guitarist Jürgen ("J.R.") Blackmore, son of Ritchie Blackmore.
