Rage is a first-person shooter (FPS) video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. It released in October 2011 for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. A Linux port was released in February 2012. Rage was the first game to showcase id Software's then-latest id Tech 5 engine, which boasted a more advanced approach to MegaTextures which was dubbed "Virtual Texturing".
Rage takes place in a post-apocalyptic near future Earth, caused by the impact of the asteroid 99942 Apophis. Players assume control of Nicholas Raine, a former US soldier put into hibernation in an underground shelter who emerges into the wasteland over a century later, and soon finds himself a wanted man under surveillance by an oppresive military organization known as the Authority.
