Professor Hector (ヘクター博士, Hekutā-hakase) is a character appearing in the Nintendo Entertainment System video games that made use of the R.O.B. peripheral. In the video games he is noted as creating R.O.B. along with Professor Vector.

Appearances[]

Stack-Up[]

In Stack-Up Professor Hector is tasked with controlling R.O.B. in organizing blocks in various orders. This is done though a 3x3 grid of buttons which Hector must jump between. In most modes there is no obstacles, but in the Bingo mode two viruses, Spike and Flipper, are also jumping around the grid giving their own actions to R.O.B. Thus Professor Hector must stop the viruses from completing their commands while giving his own ones. In the multiplayer mode Hector can compete against Professor Vector to gain control of R.O.B. and subsequently place more blocks on his side of R.O.B.

Gyromite[]

In Gyromite, Professor Hector is given a story, unlike the first game. Somehow a bunch of dynamite has appeared in his laboratory and it has been invaded by dangerous lizards known as Smicks. He must make his way through the lab while picking up all the dynamite before they explode and to avoid the Smicks without ending up in a dead end. This is made difficult due to a number of red and blue gates which blocks his path. Luckily R.O.B. is able to control them and can lift or lover them to let the professor pass. In Game B, Professor Hector sleepwalks through his laboratory and the player does not directly control the professor. Rather, R.O.B. will have to control the gates so that Professor Hector can progress and be safe from danger. When Professor Hector comes across something such as a rope or a ladder, he will automatically start to climb. There is also a multiplayer mode, and even though Hector competed against Vector in Stack-Up, they unite this time to make the lab safe.

Other appearances[]

  • Kirby's Dream Land 3: Professor Hector made an appearance along with R.O.B. who had to be reconstructed from the parts found in one of the levels.
  • Tetris DS: Professor Hector would appear on the top screen in the Wi-Fi and multiplayer modes when a game is not currently in session.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Professor Hector was mentioned in R.O.B.'s trophy:
R.O.B. sporting his Famicom colors. R.O.B. debuted in Japan as Robot in 1985 as an add-on for the Famicom. He could be combined with a "gyro set," etc. for two types of play. The player controlled Professor Hector, the TV emitted light, and R.O.B. responded to the light by moving. At the time, it was epoch-making game play. Recently, R.O.B. appeared in Mario Kart DS.
