Pokémon: Advanced Battle is the eighth season of Pokémon and the third season of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire (ポケモン・ザ・シリーズ:ルビーアンドサファイア, Pokémon za Shirīzu: Rubī ando Safaia). It originally aired in Japan from September 9, 2004 to September 29, 2005 on TV Tokyo channel 7, in the United States from September 17, 2005 to July 8, 2006 on The WB network as part of the Kids' WB! programming block, and in South Korea from June 5 to August 11, 2008 on Tooniverse, and from April 28 to May 21, 2008 on ANIONE, and the narrator of the Pokémon anime will follow the adventures of the ten-year-old Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum, and his electric mouse partner Pikachu as he continues traveling through Hoenn and Kanto with Brock, May, and Max. In Japan, the episodes comprising this season aired as part of the Advanced Generation series under two subtitles.
The first thirty-eight episodes were aired in Japan, and in South Korea as the second half of Pocket Monsters: Advanced Generation (ポケットモンスター アドバンスジェネレーション, Poketto Monsutā Adobansu Jenerēshon), and Pocket Monsters: AG (포켓몬스터AG, Poketmonseuteo AG), having their initial run in Japan from September 9, 2004 until June 16, 2005. The next fifteen episodes were broadcast in Japan, and in South Korea under the subtitle Pocket Monsters: Advanced Generation: Battle Frontier Seven (ポケットモンスター アドバンスジェネレーション戦いのフロンチア七, Poketto Monsutā Adobansu Jenerēshon Tatakai no Furontia Nana) and Pocket Monsters: AG: Battle Frontier Seven (포켓몬스터 AG 싸움의 프론티어 일곱, Poketmonseuteo AG Ssaum-ui Peulontieo Ilgob), first airing in Japan on June 23 through September 29, 2005. In these episodes, Ash collect Gym Badges in the Hoenn region so they can compete in the Hoenn League competition. Along the way, they are joined by Brock, the leader of the Pewter City Gym, and the Pokémon coordinator May and her brother, Max, as May competes in Pokémon Contests with the aim of earning Ribbons so she can enter the Hoenn Grand Festival. Afterwards, Ash returns to the Kanto region to compete in the Battle Frontier by earning Frontier Symbols from Frontier Brains, while May continues competing to earn Contest Ribbons so she can enter the Kanto Grand Festival.
The episodes were directed by Masamitsu Hidaka and produced by the animation studio OLM.
The Japanese opening songs are "Challenger!!" (チャレンジャー!!, Charenjā!!) by Rika Matsumoto for 13 episodes, "Pokemon Symphonic Medley" (ポケモンシンフォニック メドレー, Pokémon Shinfonikku Medorē) by the Pokémon Symphonic Orchestra (Pokémon Choir) for 29 episodes, and "Battle Frontier (Japanese song)" (バトルフロンツア, Batoru Furontia) by Akina Takaya for 11 episodes. The ending songs are "Smile" (スマイル, Sumairu) by Toshiko Ezaki for 6 episodes, "GLORY DAY 〜That Shining Day〜" (GLORY DAY 〜輝くその日〜, GLORY DAY 〜Kagayaku Sono Hi〜) by GARDEN for 35 episodes, "Pokemon Counting Song" (ポケモンかぞえうた, Pokémon Kazoe Uta) by Akiko Kanazawa for 11 episodes, the English opening song is "Unbeatable" by David Rolfe. Its shortened version serves as the end credit song, and the Korean opening song is "Pocket Monsters AG" (포켓몬스터 AG, Poketmonseuteo AG) by Kang Sung. The ending song is "A Happy Journey" (행복한 여행, Haengbokhan Yeohaeng) by Haengbokhan Eum-ak (Lee Jiseon, Sunwoo Huijeong, No Seong-a, Shin Oyeong, Wi Juhye and Kim Sori).
