- "I don't control the raptors, it's a relationship. Based on mutual respect."
- ― Owen describing his relationship to the raptors.
Owen Grady is an animal behaviorist who was employed by Jurassic World as a Velociraptor trainer. After the fall of Jurassic World in 2015, Grady briefly entered a relationship with Claire Dearing.[1] However this did not last and Owen would later go off to live on his own in Northern California. Dearing would later recruit him to help save Blue, a raptor he raised, from the eruption of Mt. Sibo. Owen would later participate in an incident at Lockwood Manor in which he witnessed dinosaurs being released into the wider world.
Owen is currently in a relationship with Claire Dearing, the former park manager of Jurassic World. He also is a guardian of Maisie Lockwood.
Owen Grady is portrayed in the Jurassic World Trilogy by American actor Chris Pratt and in expanded media by various actors.
Story[]
Early life[]
Little of Owen's life before being a member of the U.S. Navy and his later employment at Jurassic World is unknown. His background has never been mentioned and even his later girlfriend Claire Dearing was unaware of where he came from. Little is known of Owen's life before he became a professional Animal Behaviorist But multipile sources say Owen Grady was born to very loving parents in Chattanooga Tennessee in 1979. His father Nathan Grady was a retired Naval officer and his mother Sophie was a homemaker and Teacher. Owen spent most of his time doing three things growing up. Playing outside until the street lights came on and reading comic books and exploring the woods. Herculoids, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Dinosaucers, and The Flintstones were his favorites. He loves playing Pool and Football. At some point either before, during, or after joining the United States Navy, Owen met Barry who was also an animal behaviorist.[2]
IBRIS Project[]
After getting out of the Navy, Owen Grady was hired by the InGen Security Division to train and research the behaviors of the dinosaur species Velociraptor. As velociraptors in prior instances displayed extreme intelligence, the aim of the project was to see if raptors could follow orders and be implemented in the field for warfare. Although Owen disagreed with this goal and saw raptors as just wild animals, he went along with the project. As he worked for Jurassic World, he lived in a Sunrio bungalow in the outskirts of the park.[2]
In 2013, after discovering that the pack dynamic of Velociraptor was more complex than previously thought, he recommended his old friend Barry to Vic Hoskins to help in the training of the raptors.[3] Barry was eventually hired[2] as trainer and caretaker of the raptors.[4]
Owen would record his training sessions with the raptors in a small nursery. Several "versions" were created by Dr. Henry Wu's lab. Owen would interact with the raptors when young and display "weakness" by mock crying. Most of the tests saw the baby raptors (such as Delta) attack Owen. Eventually Owen came to test this out on the velociraptor Blue who was designed with traits of empathy. Rather than attack Owen, the baby Blue nuzzled her muzzle against him as a sign of comfort.
Later on, Owen would assemble all four raptors: Blue, Charlie, Delta, and Echo for more training as a cohesive pack. However, all the raptors except for Blue ran around the nursery not paying attention to him. As Blue noticed this, she called out commands to the others leading Charlie, Delta, and Echo to fall in line much to Owen's surprise.
Jurassic World[]
During the training of Blue's pack and just before the Isla Nublar Incident of 2015, a new worker to the paddock accidentally fell inside the enclosure of the Velociraptors when he was trying to rescue a stray pig. Owen quickly rushed inside the paddock despite his fellow trainer Barry not wanting him to as the raptors cornered the worker. After commanding the Raptor Paddock's security not to fire their taser rifles, Owen confronted his pack allowing Barry to drag Leon out of the enclosure and Owen calmed down his raptors.[2] Three weeks before the Indominus rex Paddock became open to the public, he was offered a job by Claire Dearing to check the paddock for any security breaches. He went to visit the paddock with Claire, only to find the Indominus rex not in her paddock, believing that the claw marks on the paddock's wall to be evidence that she seemingly escaped. So he, Nick Kilgore, and the paddock's supervisor, Nicholas Letting, went inside to investigate. Much to their horror, they discovered that the Indominus was still in her enclosure and had set a trap for them.[2]
He evaded the hybrid by hiding under a crane just outside the paddock and cutting the fuel tank to cover his scent, but the two men he was with were devoured by the I. rex. Afterward, he traveled to the Control Room in an embittered matter, where he watches the progress of two Asset Containment Unit teams called to capture the hybrid, only for nearly all of them to be slaughtered by the creature. Concerned for the whereabouts of her two nephews, Claire asked Owen to go with her to the Gyrosphere Valley to go and look for them.[2]
He accepted her request and the two drove to the attraction in Mercedes 05 where they found a damaged Gyrosphere 07 as well as 6 Apatosaurus, 5 of which were dead and one they witnessed dying. Owen noticed that none of the Apatosaurs showed signs of having been eaten and concluded that the Indominus rex was killing for sport. They then went into Isla Nublar's Restricted Area to search for the Mitchell brothers after finding their footprints in the mud on top of a waterfall. They soon ran inside the abandoned Visitor Center made for Jurassic Park upon hearing the engine of an automobile nearby.[2]
Once he and Claire were inside, they discovered that the boys had repaired one of the old Jeep Wrangler Staff Vehicles that was being kept in the garage. But while they were in the old center, the Indominus rex discovered them and began to chase them. However, her hunt of the two humans ended when the hybrid became distracted by the approaching helicopter JW001 that was trying to kill her. Owen and Claire then witnessed the deaths of Simon Masrani and the passengers of JW001 as well as the fleeing pterosaurs that followed. As the two saw the pterosaurs flying through the breach in the dome, they fled to the trees for cover.[2]
Owen and Claire headed to Main Street and he started shooting the pterosaurs along with the Asset Containment Unit. Owen was attacked by a Dimorphodon that tried to kill him, leading Claire to grab his rifle and shoot the pterosaur to put it to sleep. Then afterwards, the two kissed each other in the street.[2]
Owen headed back to the Raptor Research Arena and revealed that Vic Hoskins planned to use Blue, Charlie, Echo, and Delta to attack the Indominus. Owen, at first, hated this idea but then decided it was the only way. After he lured the raptors with the tracker the I. rex clawed out and rode his Triumph Scrambler motorcycle along the raptors, where they found the Indominus. However, she communicated with the raptors and became the alpha of their pack as Owen realized the I. rex has Velociraptor DNA. As the leader of the pack, she commanded the raptors that were under her control to attack the humans that came with them and were in the area, to which they followed this order. After Charlie killed an InGen Security Division trooper, she saw Owen who refused to shoot her. Seconds later, one of the InGen troopers fired a missile launcher at her, killing Charlie, much to Owen's remorse. He then distracted Blue from attacking Barry who had run to a nearby log to evade her.[2]
Upon regrouping with Claire, Zach, and Gray at the Innovation Center, Owen, Claire and the boys made their way into Henry Wu's lab, only to find some InGen Security personnel taking all of Wu's hybrid embryos during the evacuation protocol. They eventually found and confronted Hoskins, who confessed his involvement with the incident and his plans to have some dinosaurs weaponized for the military with Wu's collaboration, including a planned, scaled-down version of the I. rex. Before he could continue, however, Delta, having stealthily followed Claire and her nephews, appeared. Owen, Claire and the Mitchell brothers were then forced to flee after the raptor killed Hoskins, who failed at trying to calm her down by copying Owen's hand gesture.[2]
Later, upon exiting the Innovation Center, Owen's group were cornered by Blue, Echo, and Delta at Main Street. Owen managed to calm Blue down long enough for him to remove the head-mounted camera from her head, thereby regaining the raptor's trust. When the I. rex suddenly appeared and ordered the raptors to kill the remaining humans, Blue, and her packmates had a change of heart and decided to protect Owen from the hybrid. The I. rex retaliated by hurling Blue into a concrete wall for her defiance, seemingly killing her. Having regained his position as their alpha, Owen commanded Echo and Delta to attack the I. rex, while he provided cover fire. Unfortunately, Echo and Delta were overpowered and defeated by the I. rex in the ensuing fight; with Delta being incinerated after being thrown into the steakhouse's grill, and Echo getting tossed away.[2]
With his raptors dead, Owen now shifted his focus on protecting Claire's nephews, while she, due to a realization from Gray, went to summon the park's Tyrannosaurus rex from her paddock to battle the I. rex. Owen and her nephews barely escaped the attack from the two gargantuans, and the T. rex was also overpowered by the hybrid. However, before the I. rex could kill her, they witnessed the surprise return of Blue, having managed to survive her earlier attack, and both the raptor and the T. rex teamed up to attack the hybrid head on, while Owen, Claire and her nephews tried to evade the battle. After being flung to the edge of the park's lagoon where the T. rex and Blue cornered her, the I. rex eventually met her demise when the park's resident Mosasaurus jumped out of the water and dragged her under the water. The T. rex decided to spare Blue's life, and Owen decided to release her into the wilderness.[2]
In the hanger on the Costa Rican mainland, Owen was tending to some of the survivors before turning to Claire. When Claire asked what should they do now, Owen insisted that they should probably stick together "for survival," before they leave together.[2]
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[]
After the incident, Owen becomes a recluse and moves to the mountainside, where he is singlehandedly constructing a cabin. As a result, he and Claire broke up again, as she went on to create the Dinosaur Protection Group and knew Owen was trying to run away from what transpored three years prior. Some time after their split, Claire tries to recruit Owen in relocating the last Velociraptor, Blue, with whom he shared a close relationship with, to a sanctuary for dinosaurs. However, Owen, wishing to sever his connections to Jurrasic World, initially acts indifferently at the news of Blue’s survival and Claire’s warnings that Blue will perish, since the island was about to explode. Despite this, he ends up accompanying Claire out of concern for Blue and lingering feelings for Claire.
Back on the island, Owen manages to find Blue but is betrayed by Eli Mills's men. They shoot Blue and sedate Owen, leaving him alone in the wild while they cart Blue back to the ship. Owen wakes up and finds Claire Dearing and Franklin Webb as the island explodes. The three of them sneak onto the ship carrying the dinosaurs as it's leaving the island. They learn that the dinosaurs are being taken back to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Together, Claire and Owen drive to the Lockwood Manor to stop the auction but are apprehended by Eli's men. They are locked up and fail to stop the auction. Owen comes up with the idea to have the Stygimoloch next to them knock the wall down and the two of them escape. They run into Maisie Lockwood and together they go to the auction room. Owen leaves the girls behind as he goes to stop the auction with the help of the Stygimoloch. He reunites with the girls but they run into Eli. Owen learns that Maisie is a clone of Benjamin Lockwood's daughter. The Indoraptor, having escaped, attacks and chases them around the main floor of the manor.
Maisie gets separated from Owen and Claire. Claire is hurt by tells Owen to go after Maisie. He takes the gun and runs after her. He finds Maisie in her room with the Indoraptor poised to attack. He fires at the dinosaur but it does nothing and just as the Indoraptor is going to attack Owen, Blue appears. The two dinosaurs have it out while Owen and Maisie escape out the window. The Indoraptor comes after them and corners Owen and Maisie on the edge of the roof. Claire comes up behind him and prompts the dinosaur to attack by pointing a laser at Owen. The Indoraptor goes after him but the rooftop breaks and it almost falls through. It pulls itself back up and goes for Owen again until Blue arrives and pushes the Indoraptor through the opening. The three of them go downstairs and learn that the dinosaurs are dying due to the ventilation being broken. Claire goes to set them free but Owen is against it. Claire doesn't do it and is resolved to let them die but Maisie isn't and opens the doors anyway. Thereby releasing the dinosaurs out into the world.
Later, Owen says goodbye to Blue before she ventures out into the wilderness. Owen, Claire, and Maisie are later seen driving down a high way to an unknown destination.
Jurassic World: Dominion[]
Owen Grady will return in Jurassic World: Dominion.
Personality and Traits[]
Owen is openly confident and headstrong with a strong sense of justice for all life forms. He tends to be highly empathetic with the wildlife of Jurassic World, more so than other park staff. He sees his raptor pack as his family instead of just trained animals and knows how to handle them carefully. He comes off as very down to Earth and was openly confused as to why a genetically-engineered hybrid would be necessary to attract attention more than the existing dinosaurs in the park. Despite this, Owen demonstrates little regard or respect for authority, especially when he realizes they are acting in poor sense. This often put him at odds with both Claire Dearing, Simon Masrani, and Vic Hoskins, who refused to listen to him after the Indominus rex had escaped until the situation had reached critical levels.
Owen's weapon of choice was a scoped Marlin Model 1895SBL lever action rifle. He carried it during the Isla Nublar Incident of 2015, but never fired it until the fight between his Velociraptor pack and the Indominus.[2]
Relationships[]
Barry[]
Owen is known to have been friends with fellow Raptor trainer Barry.[4] They had known each other for before working together.[3] Despite never speaking the language, Owen is able to hold a conversation with Barry when the latter speaks in French.[2] How exactly they became friends and under what circumstances are unknown.
Claire Dearing[]
At some point while both were employed at Jurassic World, Owen and Claire once went on a date. As Owen states, she was too demanding and uptight and it was this reason why he never continued to date her. But he still seems to be interested in her as he attempted to flirt with her when she traveled to his bungalow to offer him a job. Despite this, Owen and Claire initially held little respect for one another; Claire felt Owen was all talk and did not truly understand the situation brought on by the Indominus' escape, while Owen felt Claire was a hopeless human being who gave more thought to her job than living creatures. During the pterosaurs' attack on Main Street, Claire saved him from a Dimorphodon that tried to kill him, and he thanked her with a passionate kiss. After all the visitors of Jurassic World are safely evacuated to the mainland, Owen and Claire decided that they should stay together "for survival." Their relationship presumably restarted at the end of the Isla Nublar incident.[2]
Claire and Owen continued to date and even lived together, albeit in a van on the side of a road. The two's clashing personalities and unwilingness to let their respective partners be in control resulted in Claire telling Owen to leave. Owen was under the impression he ended the relationship which would later make Claire laugh. In spite of the time apart and their clashing views regarding the fate of the dinosuars, both seemed to greatly care for one another and still hold some physical attraction. After working together to save the dinosaurs and Maisie Lockwood, Owen and Claire once again entered a relationship and became joint guardians of Maisie.
Gray and Zach[]
Owen seemed to respect Zach and Gray when he met them but was still somewhat stern in how he'd speak to the boys. He helped Claire search the island for the two and when finding how they evaded the Indominus rex remarked that they were smart. He also showed confusion but mild respect when he and Claire realized the boys somehow repaired and started an old 1993 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. The boys themselves respected Owen and seemed to look up to him with fascination due to his demeanor and skillset in addition to Owen being able to train velociraptors.
When the mission to capture the Indominus rex went arwy, Owen helped Claire keep the boys safe from danger. This included later on after escaping to Main Street sheltering the boys in a gift shop booth from harm by the I. rex. After Claire brought Rexy and the ensuing battle (in which Blue also participated) between the dinosaurs, Owen helped Claire reunite the boys with their parents.
Vic Hoskins[]
While Vic Hoskins believes that by controlling the raptors, they can use them as weapons, Owen held his belief that raptors are never to be controlled and forbids Vic to let the raptors out. But when Masrani was killed, their rivalry grew as Hoskins gains control and orders Owen to let the raptors loose. He was even more outraged when he learns that Hoskins plans to use the dinosaur embryos from Henry Wu's lab to make new dinosaurs for war and combat.[2] According to Hoskins' Lego profile, he secretly wants to steal Owen's research to make a profit.[5]
Maisie Lockwood[]
Owen first met Maisie after he and Claire escaped imprisonment in Lockwood Manor. However, Maisie was aware of Owen Grady from having seen his recorded videos from his time training the velociraptors. She was fascinated with Owen's work as well as in his bond with Blue. The two shared this empathy for dinosaurs. As Owen and Claire escaped they ran into Maisie who herself had just escaped from Eli Mills. As the two calmed the distressed Maisie down, she recognized Owen as the raptor man she saw in the training videos. When Claire asked about Sir Benjamin, Owen figured out that Maisie's distress was likely due to something happening to Sir Benjamin and acknowledged her bravery. Maisie cried and immediately hugged Owen and revealed Mills killed him. Both Owen and Claire offered to take Maisie with them to make sure she would be safe. The trio would then discover the auction held in the basement and witness the Indoraptor. After Owen sabotaging the auction, Owen, Claire, and Maisie would be stalked by the beast throughout the manor resulting in Claire being injured by the animal. Claire sends Owen off to rescue Maisie wh ofinds her upstairs in her bedroom. Despite being unable to wound the Indoaptor, Owen still helped protect Maisie as Blue returned and fought it off. The two - with Claire and Blue's help - eventually defeated the Indoaptor by tricking it to fall to its death through the skylight. After these events - and the parting of Blue - Maisie would go on with Owen and Claire who became her guardians.
Behind the Scenes[]
Owen Grady was portrayed by American actor Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World films. In expanded media, Owen has been portrayed by voice actors A.J. Locascio and Ian Hanlin. Prior to Pratt, American actor Josh Brolin was cast in the role (announced alongside actors Bryce Dallas Howard and David Oyelowo) in 2013 before leaving the part for unknown reasons.
Pratt as an actor was primarily known for comedic roles such as that of Andy Dwyer in NBC's Parks and Recreation and not an action star. However, he starred in the Marvel superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy one year prior to Jurassic World's release which (as said by Spielberg and Trevorrow in BTS footage) was coincidentally what helped bolster confidence in Pratt as an action star.
The idea of his character - a velociraptor trainer who was a military man - originated in earlier drafts of what was "Jurassic Park 4". In one of said drafts his original name was "Vance".[6] This idea was also favored by original director and the films Executive Producer Steven Spielberg.
In a deleted scene from Jurassic World, Owen reveals he has little respect for humanity as a species, declaring humans as "overrated". He expresses his feelings that socializing with other humans only complicates one's life, seemingly sympathizing with the choices Claire had made leading up to her distancing herself from her family. This is seemingly incongruent with Owen's other interactions with Claire, in which he criticizes her for her coldness towards her nephews, and therefore, is not canon to his character.

Trivia[]
- Owen Grady's signature color in both Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is blue. Owen wears primarily blue colors - blue shirts and gray blue pants -in both movies. This matches Blue the Velociraptor, whom he is closely bonded with.
- Owen also shares his signature color with Alan Grant in the first Jurassic Park film.
- Owen bares similarities to the character Frances White from the comic Jurassic Park: Dangerous Games. Both Owen and White are animal behaovirsts hired by InGen to train and raise velociraptors. Both were also viewed as "alphas" by their respective raptor packs.
- A popular fan theory is that Owen Grady is the Volunteer Boy at the Dig Site in Jurassic Park who Dr. Alan Grant scares after he calls a recently uncovered Velociraptor "a six-foot turkey".
- Prior to starring in Jurassic World, actor Chris Pratt years earlier filmed an audition tape for Parks and Recreation in which he pretended recieving a call from Steven Spielberg about starring in "Jurassic Park 4". The tape was unknown to director Trevorrow and Proucer Spielberg when they casted Pratt and they would later remark on the humor of the coincidence.
- The character of Owen Grady and the casting of American actor Chris Pratt has drawn many comparisons to the characters portrayed by classic American actor Steve McQueen. Owen bears a lot in common with classic action / adventure heroes and Chris Pratt after starring in Jurassic World would take on similar roles to that of McQueen
- Similar to Steve McQueen in much of his film career, Chris Pratt rides a motorcycle throughout the first Jurassic World film.
- Comparisons between Owen Grady and famous film character Indiana Jones have also been drawn even before the release of the first movie. Owen and Indy are both men of action and have many unique skill sets in specific disciplines - Owen in Animal Behavior, Indy in archaeology. Both are not superheroes but manage to handle situations and scenarios using their wits and clever ideas.
- Owen is the second person who successfully trained dinosaurs (predated by Frances White and followed by Kate Walker), as well as the first canon character to do so.
