Marvel Cinematic Universe television series |
Ms. Marvel is an upcoming American streaming television series created for Disney+ by Bisha K. Ali, based on the Marvel Comics character Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The series is produced by Marvel Studios, with Ali serving as head writer.
Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in the series. Saagar Shaikh, Aramis Knight, and Matt Lintz also star. The series was announced with Ali's involvement in August 2019. In September 2020, Vellani was cast while Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon were hired as the series' directors. Filming began by November 2020, shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ms. Marvel is expected to be released in late 2021 as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
Cast and characters[]
- Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel: A 16-year-old Muslim Pakistani-American from Jersey City who writes superhero fan fiction, particularly of Captain Marvel, and gains shape-shifting powers.[1][2]

- Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan: Kamala's older brother.[4]
- Rish Shah as Kamran[5]
- Matt Lintz as Bruno Carrelli: Kamala's best friend.[3]
Additionally, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Naki, Azher Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha have been cast in undisclosed roles.[2]
Production[]
Development[]
Marvel's Creative Consultant Joe Quesada said in September 2016 that there were plans to explore the character of Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in other media following her unusually rapid success and popularity among comic book readers.[6] Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in May 2018 that a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project based on Kamala Khan was "in the works", and would follow the release of the film Captain Marvel (2019) as Khan is inspired by that film's title character Carol Danvers.[7]
By August 2019, Marvel Studios had begun development on a Ms. Marvel television series for the streaming service Disney+, with Bisha K. Ali hired to serve as the head writer;[8] the series was officially announced by Marvel Studios at the 2019 D23 conference.[9] Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon were hired to direct episodes of the series in September 2020.[10] Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat serves as an executive producer on the series.[11]
Casting[]
In September 2020, newcomer Iman Vellani was cast in the lead role of Khan,[1] while set photos that November revealed Matt Lintz had been cast in the series.[12] That December, Marvel confirmed Lintz had been cast,[2] portraying Bruno Carrelli,[3] along with Aramis Knight as Kareem / Red Dagger,[3] Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan,[4] Rish Shah as Kamran,[5] and Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Naki, Azher Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha all in undisclosed roles.[2]
Filming[]
Filming began by mid-November 2020,[13][14] at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia,[15] with El Arbi and Fallah, Obaid-Chinoy, and Menon serving as directors of the series,[10] and Carmen Cabana serving as cinematographer.[13] The series is filmed under the working title Jersey.[16]
Marketing[]
A first look at the series with early footage, testimonials about the impact the character has had, and clips of Vellani's audition was shown at Disney's Investor Day in December 2020. Josh Weiss at Syfy Wire called it "absolutely priceless" seeing the exact moment Vellani learned she had been cast as Khan.[11]
Release[]
Ms. Marvel is expected to debut on Disney+ in late 2021,[2] as part of Phase Four of the MCU.[17] It was previously expected to debut in 2022.[18]
Future[]
During the series' official announcement at D23, Feige stated that after introducing Ms. Marvel in the series, the character will crossover to the MCU films,[9] which he reiterated in November 2019.[19] Previously, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson expressed interest in including Ms. Marvel in a sequel to that film,[20] and Vellani was confirmed to be appearing in Captain Marvel 2 in December 2020.[21]
