The Simpsons is an American animated television sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The opening sequence of The Simpsons features a couch gag: a "twist of events that befalls the Simpson family at the end of every credit sequence as they converge on their living-room couch to watch TV."[1][2][3] The couch gag is a running visual joke near the end of the opening sequence.

The couch gag changes from episode to episode and usually features the Simpson family's living room couch. A typical gag features the Simpsons running into the living room, only to find some abnormality with the couch, be it a bizarre and unexpected occupant, an odd placement of the couch, such as on the ceiling, or any number of other situations, such as to make a pop culture reference. Longer couch gags have sometimes been used to fill time in shorter episodes, such as in "Lisa's First Word", "The Front"[4] and "Cape Feare".[5] The show's 500th episode "At Long Last Leave" showcases each couch gag that was used in the series.

Key
  • The production code refers to the code assigned to the episode by the production team. The first two characters refer to the season the episode was made for. The first season is 7Gxx, the second is 7Fxx, the third is 8Fxx and the fourth is 9Fxx. After that, the fifth season started with 1F and continued in order until season nine (which was 5F). Starting with season ten, the production codes started with AABF, with the first letter changing for each season (i.e. BABF, CABF, etc.). The number at the end of the code is the order in which the episode was produced in a production run.[6]

November 30, 2008 KABF20
428 "The Burns and the Bees" repeat of JABF01's couch gag (only the music playing when the scene pans out to the Christmas tree is "O, Christmas Tree", not "Deck the Halls") December 7, 2008 KABF21

Homer directs the couch towards Earth, and the family (dressed as astronauts like in the couch gag to "The Principal and the Pauper") crashes through the ceiling into the living room. After he wipes his mouth with a napkin, a stain appears that resembles The Simpsons sitting on the couch. March 29, 2009 LABF05
436 "Eeny Teeny Maya Moe" The screen is white. A cartoon left hand flips an animation cel that has eyes on it, flips another that has Homer's skeleton sitting cross-legged, flips another that has Homer's stomach and a can of Duff beer on the lap, flips another that has Homer naked, another where the rest of the family are fully clothed and sitting in mid-air, and another where The Simpsons are in their living room and sitting on the couch. Marge notices Homer is still naked and pulls down an animation cel that has Homer's clothes. April 5, 2009 LABF06
437 "The Good, the Sad and the Drugly" The living room is covered in thick, jungle plants. April 26, 2009 LABF08

553 "Clown in the Dumps" In a sequence animated by Don Hertzfeldt, Homer uses a futuristic remote to turn on the television, revealing the date the episode was first aired (September 28, 2014).
