Leonardo was initially portrayed in the Volume 3 Image comic books as similar to his Mirage counterpart (at the time, Image was picking up where Volume 2 left off). He is the adult leader who always tries to do the right thing and looks very much to Splinter. He is also the one who chased Splinter the most when he mutated into a bat and disappeared.

In the latter issues of the series, he lost his left hand when it was eaten during a fight with King Komodo, although this did not seem to deter him significantly. He tried initially to use a cybernetic hand, which was given to him by Donatello, but he could not get used to it, he much preferred to wear a steel cap which came with a retractable blade.

In Urban Legends #25, his hand had started to regrow and he no longer needed the steel cap. By Urban Legends #26, his hand had fully regrown but was a little weathered.
