Laurence van Cott Niven (Los AngelesCaliforniaapril 30, 1938) is an American science fictionand fantasy writer. His best-known work is Ringworld (1970), with which he the Hugo,Nebula and Locus Awards won.

Larry Niven has mathematics degree from the Washburn University in Kansas until 1962. Since that time he has lived in Los Angeles.

Niven has from 1964, when he debuted with the story The Coldest Place, many SF-writtennovels and short stories . With Neutron Star (1967), Inconstant Moon (1972) and The Hole Man (1975) won the Hugo for best short story and with The borderland or Sol in 1976 the Hugo for best novelette. The Integral Trees brought Niven his second Locus for best SF novel.

Niven has also written screenplays for various SF television series, such as Star Trekand Land of the Lost , The Outer Limits.

Many stories by Niven in his known space (Known Space)-universe, in which humanity the solar systems in a radius of about 60 light years around our Sun shares with a dozen alien species. Also the Ring world trilogy takes place in this universe.

Niven also has a series of fantasy books written that play in the Warlock's Era. In the game Magic: The Gathering with a map for the Nevinyrral's Diskname, where the name Larry Niven spelled backwards. The map destroys everything around him, just as the Warlock's Disc from Nivens series all magic around pad. This is not the only example of the use of its name in other work. In the novel The Forge of God by Greg Bear is one "Lawrence of Cott" for. A part of the computer game Wing Commander II plays in the "Niven Sector". On the other hand, Niven numbers are named after Ivan m. Niven.

His later works are mostly written in collaboration with Steven Barnes , Jerry Pournelleand/or Edward m. Lerner.
