Music[Edit][]

Cash wrote his first songs at the age of 12, inspired by the country music he heard on the radio. During his service in West Germany, he bought his first guitar. After serving, he married Vivian Liberto and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he followed a course to disc jockey . in the evening, he played in a trio with the guitaristLuther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant.

Cash, because in service were letters not as name accepted) in Johnny Cash, and Perkins and Grant were called the Tennessee Twosince that time. This was followed by "Folsom Prison Blues" and his first major hit, "I Walk the Line", at the end of 1956. "I Walk the Line" gave up six weeks at number one in the Country top Five, after which the single in the Pop top 20 ended up. In november 1957, his first lpJohnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar, which made him the first artist at Sun with his own LP. Johnny Cash also wanted to release a gospel album , but Sun assigned its requests. For this reason, and a row over the royalties, left Cash in 1958 to Columbia Records. Sun brought then continues into the 1960s previously unreleased material by Cash out.

In 1960, the Tennessee Two extended to the Tennessee Three, with the advent of the drummer Bill Holland. By a grueling tour schedule of 300 shows a year, he became addicted to Cash in and collapsedamphetamine. In 1963 helped June Carter Cash, then still the wife of one of his drinking friends, him on the road. She wrote one of his best-known songs, "Ring of Fire", together with Merle Kilgore. In 1966 he divorced Liberto and headed to Nashville. In the spring of 1968, he married June Carter. She became his inspiration afforded by the dark periods in his life helped. They had a son on 3 March 1970, John Carter Cash.

Man in Black[Edit][]

[3][4]Cash (in black) in 1987

Typical of Cash (in addition to dark baritone voice) are the black suits, which him, certainly from the glamorous seventies, gave its own identity. It is the period in which alternative country (Twang) arises as a counter movement including pioneers as Gram Parsons, who in turn deal with the flamboyant hippie movement inspires. In 1971 sings of Cash the why of his dark costumes in the song "Man in Black". All these suits (called Nudie suits) were designed by cultfashion designers Nudie Cohn and his son-in-lawManuel Cuevas.

Drink and drugs[Edit][]

As of the end of the fifties had Cash alcohol-and drug problems, by the pressure of the long tours. He came into contact with Justice on several occasions, among other things because of the smuggling of amphetamines to El Paso. As it turned out that the ' only ' prescription medications were those he had hidden in his guitar case, he was given a suspended sentence.

Faith[Edit][]

After he regained his drug addiction had come to above, Cash also are Christian faith. June Carter Cash meant a lot to both his physical and mental condition. Looking back on that period said Cash that they and God had saved his life. The Christian faith played a big role in the life of Johnny Cash. In 1975 he released his autobiography Man in Black, in which he candidly about his turbulent life and subsequent conversion wrote. The Dutch edition of this biography appeared in 1976 at local publishers under the title Johnny Cash personally. In addition to these Cash also wrote the novel autobiography The man in white, in which he told the story of Saul of Tarsus, which later became known as the Apostle Paul.

Patriot[Edit][]

Cash had great admiration for the history of his country and the protagonists of that history, including the original inhabitants of America, the Indians. The United States had in the eyes of Cash made sure that he got opportunities. Son of a poor cotton farmer he grew into a celebrated artist. His statements about America by left and right were accepted. Since 1972 he was the guest of all Presidents at the White House. For the 200th anniversary of the United States he wrote ' Ragged Old Flag ", on the flag that the symbol is for the United States in the past 200 years.
