Biography[Edit][]

Jackson began to play violin at a young age, but soon stepped over to the piano. From the age of 16 he regularly did gigs in bars and he gets a scholarship to the Royal Academy of music in London.

But the prospect to be a serious composer drew him not to and he got the pop in with his band Arms and Legs. After two unsuccessful singles the band fell apart. He moved to France, in theatres and recorded some demos. In 1978 , he received a contract with A & M Records.

Almost immediately the album Look Sharp! recorded and released in 1979 . Soon after that follow the albums I'm the man and Beat Crazy in 1980. The Joe Jackson band was very successful and toured a lot. But also this band fell apart and Joe took a step back from the world of pop and rock and took an album full of old jazz and swing numbers on.

After he moved to New York, he played with the idea of a "pop album" without the use of a guitar. Everyone declared him crazy. Before the instrument was the guitar pop/rock. His album Night and Day is a big success (1982). It's about the excitement of New York (later he will do this again with Night and Day 2). The album gives a good idea of the various music styles from the multicultural society of the Big Apple.

More and more try Joe Jackson more the classical and symphonic direction. Symphony No. 1 is an attempt by Jackson to an instrumental album. Previously he tried this already with the classic album Will Power. This was not a success. Also, he combined with light classical music as before with the albums Night Music (1994) and Heaven and Hell (1999). The last seemed most appreciated by the public. Symphony No. 1 was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. It was among other things thus managed by famous musicians like guitarist Steve Vai going on were working. Vai worked on this album because Jackson had written a guitar solo which seemed to be not feasible. It was a challenge to this composition for Vai to perform anyway. Jackson himself does not play guitar and really has absolutely nothing with the instrument, also witness his statement for the album Night and Day "what do you mean you can't create without the use of a" pop album guitar "of course you can".

Joe Jackson managed with Symphony No. 1 also in four pieces to form a whole. The album does have the classic form of four parts, but still differentiates this Symphony itself from other symphonies by the implementation. In the liner notes as Jackson himself says: "on the eve of the 21st century, a piece which was symphonic in structure surely didn't have to be written for a 19th-century orchestra to qualify as a symphony."

In 2003, the Jackson-band after years together again and takes the cd Volume 4 on (it is the fourth album by the Joe Jackson band in this formation), followed by a worldwide tour. The album Afterlife occurs during this tour. From the album Afterlife in Netherlands are two versions on the market, the international version, but also a on the Dutch market-oriented version, in which a large number of the concert in the Heineken Music Hall on 30 May 2003 has been added.

To the chagrin of Jackson is the lion's share of his extensive catalogue is no longer available. We are talking about the part that he has recorded for A & M. bought by PolyGram (Dutch company) and later in hands come from Universal. In particular, this society has a flood of "compilations/Greatest Hits" released on cd including songs that Jackson never wanted to have. As bv. The harder they come", a song by Jimmy CliffMike's Murder is the album on LP (1983) appeared, however, never officially on cd. At a special for V & D made this compilation album there as "bonus cd" at.

In 2005, Jackson a series of concerts in the United States and Europe, including two in the new Carré in Amsterdam. Together with Ethel String Quartet and the singer/producer/composer Todd Rundgren. Each of the participants played an own set, then came back together for an encore. New in this series of performances was therefore that Joe Jackson played a solo set. During these performances, he played a new, yet unreleased song, called Citizen Sane .

Then In 2006 a new series of concerts started under the name Joe Jackson Trio, in which Jackson Graham Maby and Dave sizes together with his old Houghton is touring again by the US and Europe. In the spring of 2007 the trio did a number of small venues in Netherlands to.

The aforementioned Citizen Sane (but now in Trio-format) and a number of other new songs were played during this tour. Also the older, still unpublished Drunk Song, which Jackson had played in 1999 during the "Just For The Hell Of It" sessions, experienced a revival during this tour. Jackson is in the fall of 2007 with the trio entered the studio for the recording of a new cd, Rain, which came out in early 2008.

Although Jackson often confident and quietly he is often insecure and shy and happens to know he is really so excited not often or the public. Also, the story that Jackson a concert (or even several concerts) has broken off because the public was not quiet enough.

In 2012 The Dukethe cd, on which Jackson interprets songs by Duke Ellington . This edition is followed by a European tour, where "The Bigger Band" (with Regina Carter) will play three times in Netherlands.

In the past he has blended into the anti-smoking debate, as an opponent of the ban on smoking.
