Iron Patriot is a fictional powered exoskeleton combat suit used by several characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The Iron Patriot alias is an amalgam of Iron Man's armor and Captain America's patriotism.
Fictional history[]
Norman Osborn[]

Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot. Art by Adi Granov.
Norman Osborn donned the original Iron Patriot armor during the Dark Reign storyline to exert his authority as "commander" of H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Dark Avengers in spite of the original Avengers.[1] However, Osborn's activities as Iron Patriot have been increasingly jeopardized by various superheroes such as when he was tricked into attacking Tony Stark and when the New Avengers led by Captain America used the Iron Patriot armor's tracking device on Luke Cage as a trick to destroy his own house.[2] During Osborn's invasion of Asgard on the grounds of a national security threat, the Iron Patriot armor is disabled during Osborn's fight with Steve Rogers, revealing Osborn's Green Goblin-like face paint in fear of the Void.[3] When Rogers, Stark and Thor transfer him to the Raft penitentiary, Osborn blames his Goblin alter-ego for ruining his chance to protect America as Iron Patriot.[4]
James Rhodes[]
James Rhodes temporarily wore the Iron Patriot armor in Secret Avengers vol. 2 and the Iron Patriot series.[5][6]
Iron Patriot Drones[]
An Iron Patriot drone is seen during the Fear Itself storyline summoned to assists the New Avengers, but is vaporized by the new Red Skull's powers.[7]
A Iron Patriot drone is seen during the Marvel NOW! event at a weapons expo that Daisy Johnson and Nick Fury, Jr. were attending. During an attack carried out by A.I.M. and their subsequent fight with the Secret Avengers, the Scientist Supreme takes the opportunity to steal the Iron Patriot armor to replicate.[8] As a result, its low-level A.I. grew considerably as an army of sentient Iron Patriot drones, which A.I.M. used to incriminate the United States in numerous international attacks. The Iron Patriot drones were sent to attack Iran, to which S.H.I.E.L.D. sent the Hulk to destroy them in response.[9] Using holographic communication, S.H.I.E.L.D. hacks into the A.I.M. network so the Iron Patriot drones can understand their programmed actions are wrong.[5]
The Iron Patriot drones are next seen during the "Inhumanity" storyline when the Junkman's technopathic Inhuman powers disable them during the former's fight with the Secret Avengers.[10]
Toni Ho[]
Dr. Toni Ho wore the Iron Patriot armor as a member of the U.S.Avengers.[11][12]
Sharon Carter[]
Sharon Carter briefly wore her own Iron Patriot armor to combat Selene.[13]
Powers and abilities[]
The Iron Patriot armor featured superhuman strength, enhanced durability, flight, magnetic impact blasts, heat seeking missiles, miniaturized lasers, flamethrowers, and a communications system housed in the helmet which allowed the suit to interface with any U.S.-controlled satellite or computer network. The original Iron Patriot design lacked repulsor technology as "Oz [was] too stupid" to make his own repulsor-based weapons system so the star-shaped Uni Beam projector had a less powerful output.[14] However, the new Iron Patriot armor is a complete redesign that's an updated model.
Other versions[]
American Son[]
American Son is another exoskeleton used by Harry Osborn during the "Dark Reign" storyline,[15] and later by Gabriel Stacy.[16]
Iron Hulk[]
Robert Maverick wore the Iron Patriot armor during the "No Surrender" arc, calling himself Iron Hulk while combating the Hulk.[17]
Ultimate Marvel[]
The Ultimate Marvel equivalent of Iron Patriot armor appears during the "United We Stand" storyline due to Tony Stark/Iron Man inspired by Steve Rogers/Captain America.[18][19]
In other media[]
Television[]
- The Iron Patriot concept's animated debut is seen in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, with the original Iron Patriot armor worn by Norman Osborn and the American Son armor (known as the Patrioteer) worn by Harry Osborn.[20][21]
- The Iron Patriot concept makes sporadic appearances in the Avengers Assemble animated series. In "Exodus", the Iron Patriot armor is among Iron Man's various remote-controlled armors.[22] In "Avengers Disassembled" and "The Ultimates", Ultron hijacks the Iron Patriot armor to attack Captain America and Iron Man respectively. In "World War Hulk", an Iron Patriot-esque Hulkbuster armor is used by Captain America.[23] In "Civil War, Part 2: The Mighty Avengers", a Iron Patriot-esque mech from Truman Marsh is hijacked by Baron Strucker to fight the Mighty Avengers and the original Avengers.[citation needed] In "New Year's Resolution", the Iron Patriot armor was merged with a time-travelling robot sent by Kang the Conqueror to eliminate Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.[citation needed]
Film[]
- The Iron Patriot armor, equipped with a holographic shield, is seen in Iron Man and Captain America: Heroes United (2014) used by Captain America during a practice fight with Iron Man against the Hulk.
- The Iron Patriot armor appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, primarily used by James Rhodes in Iron Man 3 (2013)[24] and Avengers: Endgame (2019).[25] The former also featured Eric Savin impersonating Iron Patriot.
