From Here to Eternity is a 1953 film directed by Fred Zinnemann. The film stars Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift and Deborah Kerr. The film won eight Academy Awards, including one for Frank Sinatra in the category Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by writer James Jones.

In 1941 connect private Robert e. Lee Prewitt in to an army barracks in Schofield, Hawaii. Captain Dana Holmes knows that Prewitt an excellent Boxer is. Holmes wants him as a boxer when the boxing tournament of the army, but Prewitt don't want that. Holmes makes life difficult for him, hoping that Prewitt from misery runs to the Championship.
Meanwhile, Karen, the wife of Holmes, fed up with the situation with her husband. She wants to be away from him and has her eye on sergeant Milton Warden, the right hand of her husband. The sergeant and Karen start sneaking a relationship, but both realize that they are playing with fire.
In the meantime the situation for Prewitt, who is also the trumpet player of the Corps is, unbearable. Fortunately, he can count on the support of his friend and colleague Angelo Maggio. Prewitt and Maggio search together calm in the city, where Prewitt falls for Lorene. But when he leaves his post without permission Maggio, ends up in the army prison, where he is taunted by a brutal sergeant. Maggio manages to escape but dies of the injuries he has suffered. Prewitt takes revenge and kills the brutal sergeant who is responsible for the death of Maggio. Prewitt realizes that he can forget about his army career and is the next few days hiding at Lorene.
But then start the Japanese with their attack on Pearl Harbor. The barracks is under heavy fire and any help is welcome. Prewitt hears the news of the attack and decides to go help his old colleagues. But in the resulting chaos, Prewitt is not recognized. To keep a soldier orders him to stop. Because Prewitt refuses to listen, he is shot dead.Sergeant Milton Warden identifies his body.
Lorene and Karen both decide to leave Hawaii. During the boat trip, they meet. They don't know each other, but when Lorene drop the name of Prewitt, who understands Karen Lorene is.

The character eventually went to Frank Sinatra.The role is considered to be the comeback of Sinatra, who for his performance also won an Academy Award .
- When in the movie The Godfather (1972) soliciteert to the character Johnny Fontane a role in a war film which is written on his body, then that is a reference to Frank Sinatra and his role in the film From Here to Eternity. Johnny Fontane 's like Sinatra a charm singer with ties to the mafia.
- Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, wanted Aldo Rey for Prewitt and Joan Crawford for the character Karen. Thanks to Director Fred Zinnemann respectively the roles went to Montgomery Clift and Deborah Kerr.
- The audition by Frank Sinatra was so well according to the Director, that they like a scene was used in the film. This is the scene in which a drunken Maggio with olives instead of dice throws.
- During the scene in which the characters of Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster are drunk, Clift was really drunk.
- From Here to Eternity was the book a long time regarded as onfilmbaar because it was too negative in American army suggested. To get the support of the army during the filming were small details adjusted. The brothel was replaced by a nightclub and the whores by hostesses.
- The famous scene where Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr on the beach kissing, while the waves flow over them, was an improvisation.
- Shelley Winters wanted the character Lorene not play because they just gave birth was.
- Burt Lancaster was very nervous for the shooting. It was his first major, serious role and in addition, he was very impressed with the talent of Montgomery Clift.
