Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) is a film by director Stanley Kubrick .
The scenario is based on the novel Red Alert which describes the destruction of the world: the U.S. president makes a mistake that a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States provokes.
Kubrick was initially planned to be, as in the novel, a serious political thriller out of it. Gradually he realized that it was a satire to be, full of black humor , outrageous characters and humorous scenes.
With this he went against the prevailing trend to which play on the fears of political thrillers Cold War as some James Bond movies or movies from the Harry Palmer series. Kubrick thought a better political position on this came when he used humor. Something similar had Charlie Chaplin done with The Great Dictator, a satire about Adolf Hitler made.

The story begins with the U.S. General Jack D. Ripper who thinks there anywhere Communists have infiltrated our society. His own impotence , he blames on the fluoridation of water, according to him, a plot to rob his lifeblood. "the Free West According to him, every moment can therefore be a war, and so he decides the Communists a step to be: on their own and without the consent of the President decides the Soviet Union to attack.
He gives 34 patrolling nukes launchers under his command signal that they need to bomb their targets, the isolated world of the well-trained crew of such a bomber is extensively discussed. Meanwhile breaks at the Pentagon panic: none other than Jack D. Ripper had the codes to call back the bombers, and who has himself committed in an attempt to arrest him.
What the president needs to explain to the Soviet leaders that their country is being bombarded by accident? In doing so he has to deal with generals in his environment, simply a part of the nuclear power is used, a preventive overall attack on the Russians actually like the idea and the loss of millions of American lives, as the Soviets their remaining weapons firing, seen as an "acceptable risk".
The Russian ambassador appears in the Pentagon with a surprising announcement, which should actually be done only at the next party congress: as the territory of the Soviet Union attacked occurs automatically and irreversibly a doomsday device in operation. This machine, designed for reasons of defense cuts, will wipe out all life on the earth within ten months. ThePentagon gives the positions of the bombers by the Soviet Air Force, so they can be ... but one shot. timely The Russian air defenses, this device also damaged so that communication is impossible.
Then, Dr. Strangelove asked for advice, and he knows how to give. positive spin on the drama This scholar who apparently originally a Nazi is Merkwürdigliebe and after the Second World War, the Americans go to work, do not mind if the two superpowers to war with each other. He foresees the creation of a new world order and after 100 years, the radioactive fallout has been developed and the descendants of the surviving elite populate the earth again. This elite, including of course all those present in the War Room, or should withdraw into mine shafts deep underground in order to prepare. The arrival of the New Man for Every man in the group has this vision available to ten young, handsome and most fertile women.
However, he is interrupted in his argument, because the crew of the sole surviving bomber, despite technical problems and thanks much ingenuity has yet to implement its orders and the bomb thrown at a target. Accompanied by Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again go anywhere worldwide nuclear bombs going off, and the earth under.

Background [ edit ][]
- Peter Sellers was selected for four rolls but had problems with the Texan accent that he had to learn the role of Maj. TJ "King" Kong. When Sellers also broke his ankle Kubrick had to find another actor for that role. First, John Wayne asked, but did not respond again. Dan Blocker - known from " Bonanza " ( 1959 ) - refused because of the leftist political scenario. Because Kubrick himself, the actor Slim Pickens recalled from the western " One-Eyed Jacks " ( 1961 ) it was chosen for the role. Pickens (who previously had been told nothing about the movie or who had seen even the scenario) was instructed as possible to play, if it were a serious drama. Role straightforward This made for an amusing effect.
- In the scenario of Terry Southern Muffley had a severe cold. This was so funny played by Peter Sellers that the rest of the actors constantly erupted in laughter. Then Kubrick decided that Sellers should just play this role seriously, thus the rest of the actors giving the chance to put down. Completely deranged roles
- The photographic wall decoration in the office of General Ripper to propose Burpelson Airforce Base, but it's actually an aerial view of Heathrow Airport in London .
- In the film stumbles and falls General Turgidson (played by George C. Scott). This fall was real, but Kubrick found it to fit the role so he left it in the film.
- The idea for the end of the film (where singer Vera Lynn "We'll Meet Again" sings about a series of nuclear explosions) comes from Spike Milligan , Peter Sellers that formed along with part of the comedy radio series The Goon Show .
- Dr. Strangelove suffers ostensibly to "idea toric apraxia "(also known as" alien hand syndrome "), an existing neurological disorder that can be a cause stroke or another form of brain damage in the corpus callosum (corpus callosum). Researchers at the University of Aberdeen who identified the condition called it "Dr. Strangelove syndrome." According to Professor Sergio Della Sala patients behave exactly like Dr. Strangelove, beat them with their hand, and note that their hand has its own will. The arm of Strangelove is apparently still "programmed" in bringing the Hitler salute , which lets viewers immediately know where the mad German scientist (original name "Merkwürdigeliebe") are roots has. In addition, the doctor says the U.S. president a few times by mistake with "Mein Führer "...
- The film is based on the novel "Red Alert" by Peter George , an original and exciting thriller about the possibility of an accidental nuclear war. Stanley Kubrick found some very funny scenes while he was working on the screenplay. Using Terry Southern , he bowed his story into a satire . Among the changes were the addition of Dr.. Strangelove himself. He also gave names to the other characters ironically referred to as Turgidson ( "turgid" = bloated, swollen), Kissoff, Guano (= bird droppings), DeSadesky ( Marquis de Sade , where the term " sadism "comes from) and Merkin Muffley.
- In an earlier version of the scenario, Dr. Strangelove addressed as Von Klutz.
- The film is the debut of actor James Earl Jones (known as the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars series ).
- Between takes Stanley Kubrick played chess with George C. Scott. Because Kubrick won by Scott (who was known as a good chess) Kubrick increased in Scotts esteem. This also had a positive impact on cooperation Scott was known as a difficult man.
- Actor Peter Bull that the role of serious Soviet ambassador plays could not contain his laughter during a particular scene. This can be seen just before the shot ends in the scene where he and the others behind Dr. Strangelove state.
- The glove that Peter Sellers wears in his role Strangelove is Kubrick. This used the glove when he operated the hot film lights. Sellers took the gloves there are sinister look, therefore Strangelove wore the glove on his right hand - the hand that he could not control.
- Working Titles of the film was "The Edge of Doom" and "The Delicate Balance of Terror".
- In one version of the scenario all actions in the film are watched beaten by aliens .
- Since John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the premiere which was scheduled for December, 1963 was postponed until January 1964 .
- The film came in 14th place of Best Film of All Time ( Entertainment Weekly ) and the third favorite comedies (American Film Institute) .
- The film has only one female character: Miss Scott (Tracy Reed).
- The famous scene in which Major TJ "King" Kong as a rodeo rider sits on the bomb while it is being thrown is "borrowed" from an episode of "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet", a television series from the 50s.
- The bombing by Major Kong ICBM complex is located in Laputa . In the book Gulliver's Travels ( 1726 ) by Jonathan Swift 's Laputa (Spanish for "the whore"), a place where scholars live caricature.
- The Air Force of the United States did not allow production designers of the film one of their B-52 bombers would see from the inside. This meant that they had to make purely based on photos of the exterior. Estimate of the interior of the aircraft It turned out that their estimate was so accurate that the Air Force was convinced that the film designers had stolen secret information .
- Stanley Kubrick wanted a green tablecloth to the War Room, so it would seem as if the world leaders played poker with the fate of the world .
- The character General Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott) is modeled after the commander of the Air Force and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , General Curtis LeMay who was known for his rabid anti-communist stance. LeMay once said that he was willing to start a nuclear war against the Soviet Union if he was ever elected president.
