Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is a WiiWare title that is available as a reward for 2009 Club Nintendo Platinum members in North America. The game features a single bout between Little Mac and his mentor Doc Louis.[1] Though a standalone title, it uses the same game engine as the Wii version.[2]
Gameplay[]
Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is a single-player boxing game that features a small fighter named Little Mac practicing against his mentor, Doc Louis. The game plays very similarly to Punch-Out!! for Wii. Players must learn and react to Doc Louis's fight patterns in order to win. It controls the same, supporting horizontal Wii Remote or Wii Remote/Nunchuk combinations. There is no Wii Balance Board support unlike Punch-Out!! for Wii. Little Mac can punch high and low, dodge, duck, or block punches, and throw star punches like in previous titles. Unlike the original game however, players only have to knock Doc Louis down once to win the match.
Game Modes[]
Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! features three game modes: Warm-Up, Training, and Sparring. Doc Louis becomes more difficult to beat after each consecutive mode. The Sparring mode is locked until the player completes Warm-Up and Training, and must be unlocked after each reboot of the game as well, regardless of it being locked or unlocked last play.
Development[]
Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! was announced along with a Mario Cap and 2010 Nintendo calendar in the late summer of 2009 as a reward for Platinum Club Nintendo members. Members who registered enough products to achieve Platinum status by July 30 2009 were offered one of the two rewards for free. Contrary to what gamers speculated, a Nintendo Power interview with Shu Fujii (assisting manager, Planning and Development at Nintendo of America), confirmed "it's got more to it than just a demo game." The was in development following the release of Punch-Out!! for Wii, with Next Level Games handling the development duties. On October 27th, 2009, members who chose the game as their reward received a 16-digit code for use in the Wii Shop Channel to download the game.
Reception[]
Nintendo Life gave it a 7/10[3], praising that "the level of detail is great" and "the animation is smooth and fluid." Among its few complaints were "you must unlock [Sparring Mode] every time you boot up the game."
