The Dark Universe is a series of standalone feature films as a part of a franchise, developed and produced by Universal Studios, based on and featuring rebooted versions of their Classic Monsters franchise. Initially planned as a shared cinematic universe to compete with The Walt Disney Company/Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film series evolved over time to focus on each individualized story, with less emphasis on inter-connectivity. The film studio of the same name was established in 2017, as a subsidiary that would co-produce these films.
