Cormac McCarthy (Providence, Rhode IslandUnited States20 July 1933) is an American writer. In 2007, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature for The Road.Most of his books are translated in Dutch .

Before his writing career, he worked as a lawyer and served four years in the U.s. Air Force. The author currently lives in El PasoTexas.

In 1959 and 1960 he published two short stories , and in 1965 a first novelThe Orchard Keeper. From 1965 to 1967 traveled Cormac McCarthy to Irelandin search of his roots. He then visited various other European countries. In 1967 he returned to the USA. In 1968 he published his second novel, Outer Dark. In 1973 he wrote the screenplay for the television movie The Gardeners Son. In 1979, he released the novelSuttree, according to many critics his best novel ever.

His most famous novel, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West, appeared in 1985. The novel describes historical and violent events (around 1840) on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. McCarthy continued on this path and began The Border Trilogy, a work consisting of three books: All the Pretty Horses (1992), awarded the National Book AwardThe Crossing (1994) and Cities of the Plain (1998). The Border Trilogy was well received. It took until 2005 for McCarthy with the hard crime novel No Country for Old Men is. This novel was made into a film by Joel and Ethan Coen 2007. The film was widely acclaimed, including four Oscars. In between he wrote the play The Stonemason (1994). In 2006 appeared his book The Road, over a hard journey of a father and his son. For The Counselor (Ridley Scott, 2013) he wrote his first written specifically for a film scenario.
