Chespin (ハリマロン, Harimaron) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI. It is the Grass-type Starter of Kalos.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Chespin seems to resemble a porcupine or hedgehog. It has a tough spiky green chestnut-like shell covering its head and back. Chespin has brown fur, a large orange triangle-shaped nose, black oval-shaped eyes, and a toothy grin. It has sharp claws on its large feet, and an orange tip on the end of its pointed green tail.

Behavior[]

Despite having a curious nature that tends to get it in trouble, Chespin keeps an optimistic outlook and doesn't worry about small details.

Evolution[]

Chespin can be evolved into Quilladin starting at level 16, and into Chesnaught starting at level 36.

Clemont's Chespin.

Clemont received a Chespin from Professor Sycamore after it helped him defeat Team Rocket. Chespin also has a heated rivalry with Serena's Pancham throughout Ash's journey.

  • Chespie

Trivia[]

  • Chespin is the first Grass-type starter Pokémon that is not reptile-based but instead based on a mammal, in this case a rodent or a marsupial. Judging by its Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Korean name, it appears to be based on a hedgehog.
  • Chespin bears a resemblance to the Generation V starter, Oshawott.
  • Chespin's evolution line is based off the warrior class in various RPG games.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Chespin is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Pokéballs. During this time, it uses the move Seed Bomb.

Origin[]

Chespin is based on a hedgehog and a chestnut.

Etymology[]

Chespin comes from chestnut (a hard shelled nut), chinkapin (a species of chestnuts) and pin.

Its Japanese name, Harimaron, is a combination of 蝟 (harinezumi, hedgehog), 針 (hari, needle), and marron (French for "chestnut").
