Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond is a veteran of World War I who becomes fed up with the boring life he returns home to and advertises looking for excitement, thus becoming a gentleman adventurer. Many of his exploits involve his nemesis Carl Peterson and Peterson's mistress, the femme fatale Irma.

The Drummond stories were created by H.C. McNeile, who wrote under the pen name "Sapper". He wrote ten Drummond novels, four short stories, four stage plays and a screenplay before his death in 1937. McNeile’s friend, Gerald Fairlie continued to write Bulldog Drummond stories until 1954.
