Belle Reve
Information
TypePrison for metahuman criminals

Belle Reve is a prison facility used to contain metahuman criminals. It was also used as a base of operations for Task Force X and the Suicide Squad. Located in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana near St. Roch, Belle Reve has been the epicenter of several sinister attacks.

History[]

Origins[]

Belle Reve was originally the site of the former DuBois plantation, which a number of owners held the deed to the property during the years following Isaiah DuBois's death in 1897. However, the plantation was expensive and difficult to maintain, and following a string of bankruptcies, the land was abandoned until the federal government assumed its ownership and assigned it to the Department of Corrections in the 1960's. The property was turned into a prototype prison designed to house the increasing ranks of criminal metahumans. But due to budget cuts the prison was forced to remain unfinished and unoccupied for almost two decades.[1]

Task Force X[]

Belle Reve was eventually chosen by Amanda Waller to serve as the headquarters of Task Force X. Within a six-month period, the prison was completed and its equipment updated by a dozen different construction teams, thus to insured that no single individual or company that could compromise Task Force X's security. Furthermore, the prison's function as a facility for metahuman criminals conveniently justified its highly advanced equipment and high-security profile.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Belle Reve comes from the play A Streetcar Named Desire. It is the family plantation in Laurel, Mississippi where Blanche and Stella Dubois grew up. Belle Reve roughly translates from Cajun French as "Beautiful Dream". However, as "rêve" is masculine, the proper adjective would be "beau".
  • In the WB/CW television series Smallville, Belle Reve is occasionally seen as an asylum-hospital used to treat individuals who have been exposed to green meteor rock located in Metropolis.
  • Mentioned as destroyed in the Kingdom Come universe.
