Battlefield 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows. It was released in June 2005 as the third game in the Battlefield franchise.
Battlefield 2 is the first installment in the series to be set in a modern setting (arround the year 2007 to be exact), with the past 2 games being set in the second world war and the vietnam war. It has little to no plot, as most of the lore is present on the description of whatever map you are going to spawn on, from what we are told, the game is set in 2007 during a world war between various power blocs: the United States, allied with the European Union, is at war against Russia, China and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC).
There is no given reason as to how or why the war broke out. In-game, However, we do know other details about the war, such as that the United Kingdom has made special operations, separate from the EU against Russia[1] and another (unrelated to the MEC) arab paramilitary Insurgent Force that opreates in syria[2] and is commanded by a warlord[3], and that theres an ongoing uprising in southern russia[4] and kazakshtan[5], and said rebels are able to be in possesion of WMDs.
