Baby Mario is Mario's infant counterpart as well as his baby form. He was first introduced with Baby Luigi in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and has since appeared in several Mario spinoff games, often alongside Baby Luigi.

Mario himself has been portrayed as an infant in other media, namely in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Toddler Terrors of Time Travel" and the Family Album "The Early Years" comic, although this was before Baby Mario's introduction as a distinct character.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

In all of his appearances, Baby Mario is wearing a Mario Cap, being the main indicator that he is Mario's infant counterpart. In the Yoshi's Island series, Baby Mario wears a diaper along with his cap. In Mario games, Baby Mario instead wears a red shirt and overalls, like Mario himself.

In the Yoshi's Island series[]

In the opening cutscene, the Stork is on its way to deliver Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents. Kamek foresees that the two will cause problems for him, so he sets out to kidnap them. He successfully kidnaps the Stork and Baby Luigi, although Baby Mario is accidentally dropped. Baby Mario, by chance, lands on Yoshi's back in Yoshi's Island. Some time later, Yoshi and a group of seven other Yoshis circle around Baby Mario in wonder, but all of them decide to help Baby Mario on his first journey to rescue Baby Luigi.

During gameplay, Baby Mario spends most of his time on Yoshi's back. If the Yoshi takes damage, Baby Mario flies off his back and automatically appears in a bubble. During this, Baby Mario is crying, and Yoshi has only a couple of seconds to get him back, with the default time limit being ten seconds.

Baby Mario has his own temporary form named Superstar Mario, based on the Invincible Mario form in the mainline Super Mario series. In order for Baby Mario to gain it, the Yoshi has to touch a Star. As Superstar Mario, Baby Mario becomes temporarily independent from Yoshi; he can run fast, climb curved walls to reach otherwise inaccessible areas, and wears a cape that he can use like a parachute to glide short distances.

Baby Mario has a level centered around him, GO! GO! MARIO!!, namely in that he uses his Superstar Mario power-up during the last section of the level. The level select icon also shows Baby Mario running in his Superstar Mario form.

After they journey throughout the worlds, they reach Baby Bowser's Castle, where they battle Baby Bowser. After defeating him, Yoshi and Baby Mario rescue Baby Luigi and the Stork, whom they rescue, and the Stork returns Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents. The last scene shows a close-up of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi being held up by their parents.

Yoshi Touch & Go[]

The game starts off with Kamek knocking Baby Mario off the Stork and taking Baby Luigi captive, like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

During a level, Baby Mario drops from the sky, being held up by balloons, and the player to has to guide Baby Mario to the ground using clouds and trapping enemies in bubbles. When he reaches the ground, a Yoshi is at the bottom, saving him when all his balloons pop. Baby Mario then rides that Yoshi for the rest of that level, and they pursue Kamek and his Toadies to rescue Baby Luigi.

Baby Mario's temporary power-up, Superstar Mario, also returns. Upon touching a star, Baby Mario can defeat any enemy by running into them, and he can shoot an endless number of stars at enemies.

Yoshi Touch & Go is the only Yoshi's Island game to provide Baby Mario with sound effects other than just him crying while being trapped in a bubble. Baby Mario is also the subject of the game's tech demo predecessor, Balloon Trip.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

When Kamek has to search for the Star Children, Baby Mario is captured by him. Luckily, the Stork rescues Baby Mario, who joins Yoshi in a quest to rescue the others. The gameplay is almost exactly like Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Like the other babies, Baby Mario provides a few of his abilities for the playable Yoshi: running, throwing eggs, and hitting M Blocks; while the former two are actions returning from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, M Blocks were added into the game itself.

In the ending, Baby Mario becomes one of the seven Star Children.

Yoshi's New Island[]

The game takes place directly after Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The Stork discovers that Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were delivered to the wrong parents and frantically tries to get to the right house. During this event, Kamek kidnaps Baby Luigi and Baby Mario has to go on yet another adventure with Yoshi. Instead of taking place at Yoshi's Island, the game takes place on Egg Island. At the end, Baby Mario has to defeat Baby Bowser and eventually, future Bowser.
