Atmosphere is a song by the British post-punk band Joy Division.

It was originally released in the autumn of 1979 on single just 1687 copies via the obscure French label Sordide Sentimental , under the name Light und BlindheitwithDead Souls as the b-side. This single was already very hard to obtain and is now a very valuable collector's item. The song was again released as a single in 1980 , as the b-side of "she's Lost Control. In 1988 it was again on single released, with associated clip of Anton Corbijn. Meanwhile, it was also found on the compilation albumSubstance.

The song was reportedly turned up at the funeral of singer Ian Curtis. Also it came in the film 24 Hour Party People, a film about the record label Factory RecordsJoy Division , where stood on contracted for. Atmosphere sang in the sentimental scene in which Curtis in his coffin lies and producer Tony Wilson for taking leave.

What is striking to the number Atmosphere is that it is a lower number than the group usually makes. Synthesizers play the main role and the guitar, which is played by Ian, is only at the end of the track is audible.

Clip[Edit][]

The clip of Atmosphere is directed by Dutch music photographer Anton Corbijn. The clip, made in 1988 (eight years after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis), contains many fragments of Ian Curtis. Large photos of him on a beach back carried.
