{{#vardefine:$type|Ice}}{{#vardefine:$type2|Flying}} Articuno (フリーザー, Furiizaa) is an Ice/ -type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is part of the Kanto Legendary Birds, along with Zapdos and Moltres. In Generation VIII, exclusive to the Crown Tundra, Articuno has a Galarian Form that is a Psychic/ type.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Kantonian[]
Articuno is a large bird with blue plumage resembling ice crystals. Its coloring is darkest on its head crest and long, streaming tail. Its body is colored sky blue while growing lighter on its front, and its chest is a lighter blue than its body. Its most distinctive trait is its large wings, which are said to be made of ice. Its eyes are a medium shade of red.
Galarian[]
Galarian Articuno is a large bird with lavender plumage. Its colouring is darkest on its head crest and long, streaming tail. Its body is coloured white, while growing lighter on its front, and its chest is a black. Its most distinctive trait is its large wings with the edges having a border of white on the outer edge (which glow a light blue color any time it's used ice move), on its forehead is a crest that consists of three, darker lavender rhombus-shaped feathers. It has circular light blue eyes and black feathers surround both eyes, making it look like as if it wears a domino mask (which glow a light blue color any time it's used ice move), a short lavender beak, and long, thin gray legs. Each foot has three forward facing toes and one that faces backward. On its chest is a mass of black downy feathers. Each foot has three forward facing lavender toes and one that faces backward. Its long, streamer-like tail is longer than its body and the same shade of lavender as its crest.
Behavior[]
Kantonian[]
In terms of physical strength, Articuno is the strongest out of the three Legendary Birds; as shown in the Anime, Articuno is able to lift one of Team Rocket's mechas with its talons.
Galarian[]
Galarian Articuno is a migratory Pokémon that appears in the Crown Tundra every several decades. For a long time, it was thought to be the same Legendary Pokémon as the Articuno previously discovered in other regions. Though cold and callous in personality, it moves in a highly refined manner. Instead of flapping its wings, it keeps itself airborne through constant use of its psychic powers.
Natural Abilities[]
Kantonian[]
When Articuno flaps its wings, the air turns chilly.
Galarian[]
Galarian Articuno battles using intense psychic powers that act directly on the cells of living beings. The beams of psychic energy fired from its eyes have a particularly potent effect: the slightest touch of these beams leaves the victim totally immobilized as if they are frozen. Articuno then finishes off the immobilized opponents using the condensed psychic power of its wings.

Appearances[]
Anime[]
Articuno first appears in the Anime when a boy named Todd, who loves to take pictures, takes pictures of Articuno in the episode Freeze Frame. Ash Ketchum and co. befriended Articuno after Articuno's Blizzard blew away Team Rocket.
The same Articuno appears again and is a friend of Factory Head Noland in the episode Numero Uno Articuno. Noland became Articuno's friend when he saved the injured Articuno on his plane. Ash attempted to get the Knowledge Symbol by defeating Articuno, which obeyed Noland's command, and he accomplished this by using Charizard.

- The last time Articuno was available by event was 2006.
- It is the only member of its trio that can't learn Heat Wave.
- As it says in name pun, the last few letters were based on Spanish numbers.
- In Pokémon GO when the player makes the Legendary Pokémon as a Buddy after capturing each of them during the Raid Battle, Articuno along with Lugia, Zapdos and Moltres are the hardest to get their candies which is in 20 km.
- In Super Smash Bros., Articuno is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Pokéballs. During this time, it uses the move Icy Wind.
- Articuno (alongside Zapdos & Moltes) is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Like other Galarian Legendary Birds, its Shiny Galarian Form has its Kantonian form's color scheme.
Origin[]
Articuno is based on the Simurgh, deriving from the Persian رخ rokh, which is a giant arctic bird. Its long tail and small body also may be a reference to the quetzal. In addition, it is anatomically similar to the white-throat magpie-jay.
Galarian Articuno may be based on the Irish goddess Nemain, with elements of the Tragopan family, bird-of-paradise and quetzals. Its appearance in particular is similar to Nemain's depiction in the Shin Megami Tensei games. Its design could also be a reference to Angry Birds Space, specifically Chuck as Lazer Bird, owing to its purple feathers and black goggle-like features on its face, and its signature move.
Etymology[]
Articuno's name is a cross of the words "arctic" and "uno", the Spanish word for one. The second part of its name indicates that it is the first in the series of Kanto's Legendary Birds.
Its Japanese name is simply "Freezer".
