Aretha Louise Franklin (Memphis (Tennessee)25 March 1942) is an American gospel-, soul-and R & B singer.

Aretha Franklin sang as a child with her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, in the Baptist Church where her father was Pastor . Her first recordings she made when she was 14 years old. She was discovered by John Hammond and closed a contract with Columbia Records. She made a few early 1960s songs that became popular, including rock-a-bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody .

After her departure with Columbia Records locked them a contract with Atlantic RecordsJerry Wexlerwas her producer, with whom she had a few very influential R & B recordings made, as I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You). The style of this song had a lot more "soul" than her previous work. By the end of the 1960s Aretha Franklin got the nickname "The Queen of Soul", because they had become so famous and also as a role model for the African American community was seen.

Aretha Franklin had many top 10hits, including covers of other celebrities, such as The Beatles (Eleanor Rigby), The Band (The Weight), Simon & Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water), Sam Cooke and The Drifters.

Other major hits were Chain of FoolsNatural WomanThinkBaby I Love YouThe House That Jack BuiltI Say a Little Prayerand RespectSpanish Harlem was standing in the Towering Thirty one week on the first place.

At the beginning of the 1980s it seems beyond her career, until she makes a cover of the Doobie Brothers- What a Fool Believeshit. Shortly afterwards she is admired in the classic John Belushi-music film The Blues Brothers. It takes another seven years afterwards before they reach the charts again retrieves, but does she do that also with the massive hit "I Knew You Were Waiting (for Me)", a duet with George Michael that a few weeks at number 1 in the Top 40 and was the National Charts. The song was written by Simon Climie of Climie/Fisher. In 1994 she sang even Deeper Love for the cinema cracker Sister Act.

On 3 January 1987 she became the first woman who got a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1999, she received the highest American art award, the National Medal of Arts.

On January 20, 2009 Franklin sang My Country, ' Tis or tea during the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th President of the United States.

9 december 2010 it was announced that at the American singer pancreatic cancer has been established. After a lot of speculation from the press declared the singer have overcome the disease and once again all the way to want to focus on singing.

Aretha Franklin was by the American music magazine Rolling Stone named best singer of all time.
