Angel Eyes Sentenza is a fictional ruthless mercenary from the 1966 Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly portrayed by Lee Van Cleef.
Film bio[]
Angel Eyes plays the role of the Bad in the film, a sociopath with no human feeling who kills anyone in his path. He afterwards brutally beats up a young prostitute.
When Blondie (Clint Eastwood) and Tuco (Eli Wallach) are captured while disguised as Confederate soldiers, Angel Eyes is the Union sergeant who interrogates them and tortures Tuco, consequently learning the name of the cemetery where the gold is buried, but not the name on the tombstone. Angel Eyes forms a fleeting partnership with Blondie, but Tuco and Blondie turn on Angel Eyes when they get their chance. When the trio arrive at the cemetery a 5 minute Mexican stand off between the three men ensues. Finally Angel eyes draws his gun to shoot Tuco but he is not quick enough and is shot by Blondie, wounding him, Blondie then shoots him again this time fatally, sending his lifeless body rolling into an open grave.
Real name[]
The real name of Angel Eyes is Sentenza, as revealed by the Italian version of the movie. The English nickname Angel Eyes was actually invented on the set by Eli Wallach. The real name of Sentenza is never revealed in the English dub of the movie.
Casting for Angel Eyes[]
Originally, Leone wanted Charles Bronson to play Angel Eyes but he had already committed to The Dirty Dozen. The director thought about working with Lee Van Cleef again. "I said to myself that Van Cleef had first played a romantic character in For a Few Dollars More. The idea of getting him to play a character who was the opposite of that began to appeal to me," Leone remembered.[1]
Reception[]
Angel Eyes was voted 81 in Wizard Magazine's 100 Greatest Villains of All Time.
References[]
In the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, the character Cad Bane is based on Angel Eyes. Bane is a bounty hunter with a ruthless streak, similar to Angel Eye, who is a psychopathic mercenary.
